I spent the day on edge waiting for the last bell to ring so I could have Zada drop me off at the gas station. I had never been so excited to work in my entire life. Ramen was starting to make me feel sick, and I was getting to where I would rather starve than eat it. I was living on water without telling Zada or anyone else.

She was texting with a scowl on her face when I met her out front.

“Hey, everything okay?” I asked, adjusting the strap of my bag.

She sighed and rolled her eyes. “Yeah. Reggie's a jerk.”

She started toward her car, and I followed.

“He seems to think I was flirting with Saint the other night, which I wasn’t. Now he’s all pissed and acting stupid. He’ll get over it.”

“That sucks.”

“Yep. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Saint’s hot, but I’m in love with Reggie. He knows that.”

She turned up the radio when her favorite song came on, and things went quiet between the two of us until we reached the gas station, and I asked her to drop me off.

“Want me to stay and wait for you?” she asked.

“No. It might take me a while to apply and everything. I’ll walk back. It’s not far.”

“Okay, girl. Text me if you need me.”

I agreed, not telling her my cell was disconnected, and then I closed the door and waited until she pulled off before I went inside. An hour later, I left with a job making minimum wage and a sense of relief that was unbelievable.

I started the next day. Bruce, the manager of Smiley’s, was able to work with my school schedule, and since I was willing to work as much as possible, he had me on the schedule from four to midnight on weeknights and day hours on weekends.

The first three nights were training, but on the fourth night, I was able to work the cash register on my own. The place was so busy I stayed on my feet the entire night and barely had a second to eat a pack of crackers for dinner.

I found myself walking home a little after midnight every night, showering, and passing out in my sleeping bag to get in a couple of hours before it was time to wake for school.

For the first time in my life, I skipped school on Friday so I could sleep in. I was ahead in my classes and exhausted. Missing one day wasn’t going to kill me. I woke up at eleven in the morning and found myself alone in Zada’s house.

It wasn’t until I passed the calendar on their kitchen wall that I realized it was the day before my birthday.

How did a person forget their birthday?

It was the first time in my life I was going to be spending my birthday alone. Zada’s dad was out for the weekend. A buddy of his was taking him to the casino. Zada was at school, but she and Reggie were supposed to be going to dinner and getting a room together for the night.

I had no way of reaching out to anyone since my phone was off, so I wouldn’t even be able to call Erik the next day and wish him a happy birthday.

Everything sucked.

I ate my package of Ramen, feeling sorry for myself. I wouldn’t tell anyone how bad it was, but at least I had a job. Hopefully, I could get my phone turned back on with my first paycheck.

I washed my bowl when I was done eating and then sat around for the next hour watching the cars go by out the front window. I had no phone, and they didn’t have cable or internet, which meant I was slowly coming out of my skin.

When Aiken rode by on his bike and disappeared into their garage, I couldn’t stop myself from walking over to his place and at least saying hi.

Closing the door behind me, I walked down to Crow’s place. I knocked, but there was music playing so loudly inside they couldn’t hear me. It was stupid, but I checked the knob and found it unlocked. Maybe Aiken was in the garage with the radio on. In that case, I wanted to sit and watch him fiddle with the bikes until it was time for me to go to work.

That’s not what I found.

Aiken was lying back on the couch, his arms lying across the back of it. His head was relaxed back, and his jaw was tight while a blonde kneeled in front of him and sucked him off. Her head bobbed up and down, and when she sped up, he pushed her mouth down onto his penis until she was gagging.

It was strange since technically we were nothing to each other, but the pain I felt took my breath away. I backed away, hoping he wouldn’t see me, but instead of going through the doorway, I backed into a shelf and knocked a frame over. It fell to the floor with a crash that had Aiken’s eyes popping open.

He looked up, his hot green gaze connecting with mine. His eyes grew wide, and his mouth dropped open as he pushed on the back of her head and growled his release into her mouth.
