My eyes scanned his face, noticing the bruising beneath his eyes.

“Woah. Who got a piece of you?” I chuckled.

“Fuck you.” He grinned. “You should see the other guy.”

“Hopefully, he only got in one hit.”

He laughed. “Oh, no doubt. One and done.”

“So, what’s going on? Everything okay, or you need me to back you up?”

“Yeah, man, I’m good. I was just stopping by to let you know how I’m headed out of town for a bit.”

“Running from pussy or chasing it?” I snickered.

“Nah, man. I never chase it.”

“So, you’re running?”

“Nope. Nothing bad. I just want to head down to Florida and get out of this cool weather for a bit. You should come with me. We’ll head down to Key West and get into some shit.”

That sounded better than it should have, but I was too close to my dream to drop the ball and run off on an impromptu vacation. Once I had my shop set up and business was rolling well, maybe then I would take some time away for myself.

“I would, but the boys and I got some shit coming up.”

He shook his head and sniggered. “Leave it to my baby bro to work his life away. If you don’t stop to enjoy it every now and again, it will be over before you know it.”

“I know. I’m just trying to get some shit taken care of and cleared away before I take it easy.”

He held his hands up, palms out. “Hey, I’m not hating. Do you, little bro. Once you get that business running, I’ll come and work for you.”

I laughed. “Yeah, right. Like I would let you anywhere near an engine.”

“Whatever. I’m the engine master.”

We laughed because we both knew that was bullshit. Junior was good at many things, but fixing an engine wasn’t one of them.

“When are you coming back?” I asked.

Sometimes he would leave for months at a time, but if he checked in and texted every few days, I never worried.

“Not long. Maybe a couple of weeks. Call if you need me.”

I nodded. “Same for you. Be careful.”

I tapped the top of his car and stood in the driveaway, as he pulled away. Maybe he was getting his shit together and was leaving the Border Lords alone.

Perhaps he was helping her out.

As she requested, I quit fucking with her. There was no more paying for things—no more checking on her, and I was coming out of my skin with worry.

Feeling the need to ride, I went into the garage and got on my bike. The engine roared to life when I cranked it, echoing through the space, and when I pulled onto the road and took off from the house, I breathed in the fresh air.

I was passing Zada’s house when I saw Everly get out of the driver’s side of her brother’s car. No big deal. Maybe he was letting her drive it back and forth to work now, which made me feel a lot better. I hated her walking to and from Smiley’s.

I passed in front of her, taking her in, and when I saw her face, I slammed on the brakes and turned, leaving a trail of smoke and burnt rubber behind me. I sped back to the driveway, catching her before she disappeared into the house.

Ripping my helmet from my head, I cut the engine on my bike and kicked down the kickstand. Still, she kept walking as if I hadn’t pulled into the driveway.
