“She took me by surprise. I swear to God that’s the truth. That was my mistake. I forgot what a fucking snake she is. She thinks we’re going to get back together, and Ipromise, that’s never going to happen.”

“So explain to me how the two of you ended up kissing when you’re so determined to never be with her again.”

“I can’t make it that easy for her.” I groaned, letting my head fall back. “It’s true. She needs to pay for what she’s done. I’ll let her sweat it out for a little bit, let her believe I’m thinking it over. I want her to get her hopes up so she knows what it feels like to have them crushed. That’s what I want, and you’re the only person I would ever admit that to because you are the only person worth admitting it to. As soon as it happened, I got in a cab and came straight here because all she does is remind me of everything I love about you.”

Love.He used the word love. He didn’t loveme, but he loved thingsaboutme. How pitiful was it that my heart took those words and clung to them? Still, I shook my head. “You don’t have to say that.”

“Dammit. What is it going to take to make you understand?” He sank to his knees in front of me. “Evelyn. I don’t want her. You were the person I dropped everything for. I had to get back to you. Doesn’t that mean anything? Can’t you see? She’s nothing.”

Did he mean it? I searched his face, staring deep into his eyes. What was I looking for? I had no idea.

Reassurance?

Hope?

“You have to believe me.” He reached out, and I closed my eyes when he touched my face. She might’ve kissed him, but he was here with me. On his knees before me. Practically begging to be forgiven. Truth be told, there was nothing to forgive. He wasn’t mine and never would be.

But he was, in that moment, wasn’t he? All mine. His heartbreakingly blue eyes burned into mine. “Say something,” he pleaded in a whisper.

He might not have been mine forever, but he was mine at that moment. This was only supposed to be for fun, anyway.

He wanted me to say something? Then, I would give him what he wanted. “Can you do something for me?”

He didn’t hesitate. “Anything.”

“Take me to bed.”

Itraced a line down Evelyn’s bare shoulder, relishing the way she reacted from my touch.

“You know, the thing about sushi is, it makes you feel so full when you first eat it. But before long, it’s like you never ate anything at all.”

I laughed. Damn, I loved a girl who likes to eat. I’d practically devoured her the second my eyes were open. Being in bed with her after the disaster we’d barely averted the night before was a gift I wasn’t about to waste. “Is this your way of telling me you’re hungry?”

“I can’t live on sex alone,” she said with a sigh.

“Hey, now there’s an idea.”

She snorted before giving me a weak smack on the arm. “Slow down, stud. I’m still trying to catch my breath.”

“I was going to say you should start a new diet craze. Call it the Sex Diet. You’d make billions.”

“I like it.” She rolled to her side, facing me. “Every time you get hungry, have sex.”

“I would be more than happy to help you test it. Just saying.”

“I’ll keep you posted once we’re in the testing phase.” When I made a move for her, she grabbed a pillow from behind her head and shoved it in my face. “For real, I need to eat!”

“That’s exactly what I was thinking of doing now that you mention it.” I nudged her legs apart while she giggled and made little half-hearted attempts at pushing me away.

“I’m serious. I’ll end up passing out halfway through because my blood sugar is too low.”

“Well, that settles it. It’s a lot more fun while you’re conscious.” She smacked me with the pillow again, then got out of bed to join me for a quick shower after wrapping her leg. She wouldn’t have to do that much longer once the sutures dissolved. Every day took her one day closer to that.
