Gillian looked like Rhiannon had kicked her. “Oh.” She licked her lips. There were tears in her eyes, actual tears. “Okay. Sorry.” She started to walk away, but then she turned back, jaw trembling, her hands balled into fists. “You know, I have a really hard time talking to people. You don’t have to be such a bitch.”
Oh, how Rhiannon was not in the mood. “You don’t have to be so weird,” Rhiannon said under her breath.
Then she walked away. She didn’t feel sorry for saying it. Not one bit. Because here was the thing: She’d always been able to spot a liar. And Gillian was most definitely a liar. About what, Rhiannon wasn’t sure.
Then she thought of the message that had popped up on her phone moments before.
Hi baby,it read.It’s me. Your mom. Wondering if you wanted to come for a visit. It’s been a long time.
Of course Rhiannon knew Gillian was a liar. Liars knew their own kind. That was because Rhiannon was a liar, too.

Friends, I’ve never been so humiliated. I went to shoot my shot, and I crashed and burned. I want to curl up in a ball and cry. This is where anxiety stems from. People who just cut you down. People who are unkind. Let’s just say I failed. Colossally.
I just don’t get it. I wanted answers from her—more than she gave me, anyway, which was just a simple “No, I don’t think so” and a mutter under her breath that I was weird. WEIRD! Are you even allowed to say that anymore?
I did follow her for a little bit, mustering up the courage to ask what her deal was. I thought I deserved that much. I kept my distance, though. I didn’t want her to think I was stalking heror something. She got on the phone with someone pretty quickly. She was being secretive about the conversation, and at first I thought she was talking to L—about me. But then I heard her ask someone if they needed her to make the trip now. Work was busy, she said. It wasn’t a good time to drop everything. So I supposed it wasn’t L, then. She waited a minute, and then she was like, “I’ll come. But I can’t come for long.”
And then she hung up and swung around—almost like she saw me. I ducked into a doorway like some kind of spy. I really wished that wherever she was going, she wouldn’t come back. I wished there was a way I could make that happen.
I know, friends. That’s mean. I’m not a mean person. I only wrote that because my feelings are hurt. You know that, right? Of course you do. I can always depend on my community for support. Thanks for letting me vent. Love ya!
