Page 66 of Bleed for Me

If he hurt her, I’m going to murder him. Slowly.

“I need you Mick.” She says instead of answering my question. “Please.”

I glance at Jesse who just made his way back into the room and is now watching me intently. Inhaling, I push back my emotions. “I’ll come get you, baby. Do you know where you are?”

Her answer is immediate. “No.”

“Okay. I need you to do something for me then. I’m going to put you on speaker and have Jesse, my friend, walk you through what you need to do.” I give him a nod and flip the call to speaker.

Jesse straightens and comes closer. “Hi Paige.” He says softly, eyeing me. “Do you have any data on your phone?”

Shuffling sounds through the line before she responds, her voice farther away. “Yes.”

“Great. We’re gonna have you download an app onto your phone called FindMe. Once it’s downloaded, it’ll give you a randomly generated code that you’ll give us so we can connect and see your location. Okay?”

“Got it.” Paige’s voice has lost the emotional distress from earlier but the monotone concerns me just as much. I wring my hands, thoughts of what could be causing the hot and cold in her flash through my mind. None of them are good.

I shuffle my feet as the seconds tick on, each bringing us closer to reuniting. I bite back a groan as the image of claiming her in front of Seth’s dangling corpse fills my mind. Jesse says something and I snap back to the present, needing to focus so we can get to her.

“-29n1jwi1g0. Jesus, that’s a long code.” Paige grumbles, causing Jesse to chuckle. I glare at him, warning not to get any ideas. He rolls his eyes and taps away on my phone.

Snapping his fingers, he points at the small dot blinking on the screen. “Got it!” A name is listed above the dot. My heart swells and a small smile breaks through as I read the username she chose.

Little Bird

Leaning closer, I inspect the map, my brow furrowing. They are at least a three hour drive from here and appear to be heading to nowhere. A sinking feeling forms in my gut. “Paige.” I snap, anxiety sharpening my voice.

“Hmm?” She replies in the same monotonous tone as before.

I pinch my fingers over the flashing dot and zoom out the screen, dragging it in both directions. No matter where I move away from the dot, there’s nothing but empty woods spanning miles. “Are you alone?”

Paige inhales sharply, “No. Seth is…here?”

I look up and meet Jesse’s eyes, confusion clouding my mind. “If he’s there, why were you able to call me?”

“I, um,” She hesitates, clearly wanting to avoid the topic. I wait in silence for her to answer, needing to know. “I stabbed him.A lot.” She whispers the last two words and Jesse’s eyes widen.

Fuck.

“Why did you stab him, baby?” I ask carefully, holding Jesse’s astonished gaze. His forehead creases as he contemplates the words.

I can hear Paige shifting in her seat and another sniffle. My fingers curl and I press them into the countertop, enraged by her pain. “He tried to…he did…I couldn’t…” She starts and stops her thoughts repeatedly.

Growing impatient and increasingly worried, I demand, “Paige. Tell me what he did.”

Paige brokenly whispers, confirming my fears, “He assaulted me. Tried to rape me.” A quiet sob follows the revelation.

In a blink, I heave the stool into the wall. Roaring, I chuck anything my fingers can reach. The room quickly fills with shattered glass, broken dishes, and upended furniture. No longer caring I have an audience, I shout curses and vows. Promises to drain the life from Seth, ending his pathetic existence. I’m a caged animal, demanding to flee to avenge my mate.

My soiled little bird. He will pay for this.

I hear a soft gasp come over the speakers and pause my rampage, chest heaving.

“No.” She whimpers. I stalk back to my phone, snatching it up. Switching off speaker, I press it against my ear. “Fuck. Stop!” I hear her cry out, the sound quickly cutting off.

“Paige?” She doesn’t respond, the silence thick.

A shuffling noise breaks the quiet before a low chuckle. “Hey asshole.” If I wasn’t already planning to peel every inch of skin from his body, the cocky prick would have just added himself to my kill list. I remain silent, unable to speak past the hellacious rage. Seth sighs dramatically. “Alright. I’m not sure what your plan was, but you’re too late. She’s mine, always has been.” Grinding my teeth, a low growl rumbles from my chest. “You’ll never find us, so I suggest you just leave it alone.” He ends the call, having issued his warning.
