I groan again and will the floor to swallow me up whole.

Chapter 5

Mick

I couldn’t stay away.

After taking care of Harvey that night, I found myself back at the coffee shop, watching as Paige locked the door and closed up. I knew I shouldn’t have been there but something about her drew me in.

A spark of anger flared as I realized she was there alone. It’s not safe for a beautiful girl like that to be alone downtown at night. Especially with a serial killer on the loose. Not that she needs to worry about that. At least, not in the way others do. As I had watched her gather up the trash, I noticed that there were no trash cans out front, which meant she would most likely be going into the alley behind the building to dispose of the garbage. I stalked around, sticking to the shadows, and watched. At one point, she must have sensed me as she looked up and straight over in my direction. I held my breath and pushed back into the shadows further. There was no way she could see me but I still needed to be careful. After she darted back inside, I felt the spell break and berated myself. Grumbling angrily as I forced my body to get in the car and drive away.

That night started a daily routine. I would go to her shop and watch as she worked, then follow her home and try to catch a glimpse of her through the windows.

It wasn’t healthy but not much about my life could be considered good for the average person. The only times I spent away from her were with Jesse or the occasional fuck with Veronica. Even still, I found myself picturing Paige every time. Her long black hair, amber eyes staring at me, the sound of her saying my name replacing the shrill cries Veronica made.

Earlier today when I saw her leaving the apartment, she looked so nervous I had canceled my plans to make sure she was alright. Following her to the parking lot, I watched as she circled several times until finally choosing a spot close to the front. I parked a few rows over and had every intention of remaining in my vehicle until I noticed the glimmer of keys peeking out between her fingers. Something had spooked her and I needed to make sure she would be safe.

That’s how I ended up inside, speaking to her, resisting the urge to laugh and reprimand her stupidity. I knew I had to leave, though, before I did something I would regret. Like kidnapping her. Sure it would keep her safe from anyone else meaning her harm, but I have no intention of killing Paige. She’s far too intriguing to snuff out.

My phone buzzes as I reach my car and drop heavily inside.

Jesse:

All good bro?

Me:

Yeah, sorry to bail. Something just came up that couldn’t wait.

Jesse:

Naw, you’re good. I’m actually gonna hook up with Rik for lunch now anyway. She’s really gotten frisky since we started using some of that shit you sent me.

Me:

Awesome man. Have fun *devil emoji*

Jesse:

Fuck yeah *fist pump emoji* *eggplant emoji* *peach emoji*

Chuckling to myself, I exit the chat and pull up my notes.

It’s been a while since my encounter with Harvey and I’m starting to get the itch again. I know I won’t be able to act on anything for at least a few weeks after I choose so I need to make a decision quickly. Scrolling through the names, I mentally picture each person.

Mark Theinnes

Kyle Pretick

Ugh, I hate Kyles.Pretentious, frat boy fuckers. Man deserves to die just for the name alone.

I shake my head, still doesn’t feel like the right one.
