A throat clears, breaking the spell. Both Killian and I look toward Andrew. Rubbing the back of his neck, he gestures toward the roof. “Sorry to break this moment up but we need to do something about them.”

With a sigh, Killian turns to me and presses a soft kiss to my lips. “I’ve got to take care of this then we can go home.” He promises as he breaks from the kiss and heads out the door.

I watch the two men disappear. Unable to hold back my curiosity, I hobble over and peek out. My eyes widen as I take in the scene before me. All the men who were standing before Killian now lay lifelessly on the rooftop. Pushing off the doorway, I make my way out toward the bodies. My eyes land on the man who shot me and I feel a concerning amount of joy to find his corpse.

Continuing my exploration, I pass several men before coming to a stop before one who seems to be out of place. He’s dressed in a fancy black suit now ruined by the blood pooling from his stomach. I bend over, unable to fight the urge to look closer.

I gasp as a hand wraps around my wrist. Before I can react, the man leaps to his feet, shielding his body with mine. “That was stupid.” He mutters in my ear, turning us to face the men working to clean up. “Oh Killian, look what I’ve got.” He calls out.

Killian freezes before slowly turning to face us, a look on his face I’ve never seen before. I gulp, fear making me shake. “Let her go.” He warns in a low voice, taking a step forward.

“Ah ah.” The man tsks, laughing in my ear. I stiffen as I feel his hand slide down my side. “Careful now, wouldn’t want me to hurt your precious little plaything would you?”

“I’m only going to tell you one more time, Charles.” Killian growls. “Let her go.”

Charles. Why is that name familiar?

Charles pulls me with him as he backs up. “You know I can’t do that.” He says, his voice shaking from the effect Killian has on him. “We had a deal and you haven’t lived up to your end.” Backing up further, he suddenly comes to a stop and I glance behind us to find we are now up against the edge of the roof. My eyes widen as terror turns my stomach and I fight the need to vomit. “You knew the consequences if you didn’t give me what I wanted.” Charles continues and a sickening awareness spreads through me.

He’s going to kill me.

As the thought passes through my mind I realize why I recognized his name. “You.” I gasp.

Charles looks at me, chuckling. “Me what, sweetheart?”

Glaring at him, I straighten. “You did this. You’re the one who tried to kill Killian.” He beams at me, only serving to fuel my rage. With all the pent up emotions inside feeding my anger, I elbow him as hard as I can into the wound on his gut.

Charles stumbles, clutching his stomach. With a shriek, I push him and watch as he tumbles over the ledge.

I’m frozen in place, unable to move, staring at the spot he fell.

I just killed a man.

Somehow I’m not as upset by the fact as I thought I would be.

I’m pulled into Killian’s embrace and slump, my body suddenly feeling too heavy. “Can we go home now?” I whisper, numb from the whiplash of emotions this day has brought.

“Of course baby girl.” Killian murmurs. He says something to Andrew but I don’t listen, staring at the ledge with vacant eyes. Killian ushers me forward, off the roof and down the stairs.

I’m still lost in my head as he helps me into Andrew’s car, the same thoughts repeating in my head over and over.

I’m a killer. I killed a man.

Somehow I know I’m never going to be the same again.

Chapter 43

Killian

The days following our standoff with Charles have been a blur. It’s weird to be a free man, atruly freeman. The only concern is lack of funds flowing in but Andrew has assured me that he has a plan.

I watch Avamarie make her espresso from my seat at the island. We haven’t talked about Charles’ death or her hand in itbut if it’s bothering her, she hasn’t let on. My eyes travel down her body, taking in the delicious curves. I don’t know how I got lucky enough that she chose me as much as I have chosen her.

Avamarie brings the cup of coffee to her mouth and takes a sip. Her moan goes straight to my cock. “Fuck baby girl, make noises like that and I’m going to have to fuck you right here in the middle of the kitchen.” Her eyes shoot up to mine, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. I’ve made a point to implement more dirty talk since discovering she enjoyed it and enjoy it she has.

Setting the cup down on the counter, she holds my gaze as she slowly licks her lips and lets out a husky moan.

I leap up from my seat, rounding the kitchen in a few long strides. Grabbing a fistful of her hair, I yank her head back. Avamarie gasps as I lean forward and growl, “What did I just say?”
