Jessie lifts her brows up and down with a sly grin. “Purposefully making foreplay.”

“He does love the buildup. Anyway, he interlaced our fingers as we squished the bananas between our fingers. He kissed me here, here, and here.” I point to my shoulders, neck, and ear.

“The whole time we mixed it and formed the loaf he was gently kissing me. And once we put it in the oven, let’s just say, Beau grew into a man. When we were kids, I had no idea there were so many ways to have sex, and he’s mastered them all.”

My friends roar, and Jessie begins dancing suggestively. I should let her know that Beau is probably watching but I don’t. It will be fun to see if he says anything or tells Maverick.

When we finally quit dancing, Jessie announces, “Maverick said he’ll fly us to Nashville so we can all go together.”

“It’s going to be so much fun. Thank you for supporting my first function as owner and CEO. We’re going to show these old guys how to party.” We raise our mimosas and clink our glasses together.

Jessie glances at Wynter. “Umm, I hate to bring this up, but have you heard from your dad?”

They’re sitting on each side of me, and they each reach for my hand. My dad is my only family. My grandparents passed away years ago and my mom, well, I don’t even know why I gave her that title. She’s the opposite of everything a mom should be. I should refer to her as the anti-mom.

My dad is the only person that has loved me unconditionally. Although I always felt like Beau loved me unconditionally, he didn’t. He didn’t give me a chance to explain. He’s been back in my life a little over three weeks, and he regrets walking away and promises that at the next sign of trouble, we’ll work it out together.

It feels like a web of cotton stretching across my throat. I shake my head. “Part of me knows I should take it all seriously, but it’s also so like Dad to extend a vacation or get caught up with some gold digger half his age.”

“But he’s not on vacay. If he was he wouldn’t have signed over the company and made sure you had a bodyguard,” Wynter says, challenging me.

“I’m just glad they hired Beau. I can’t imagine the invasion of privacy with anyone else.” I sit back in my chair. “I’ll have extra security Saturday at The Bourbon Ball, so it will take some of the pressure off of Beau.”

Ali asks, “Has anything happened to you? Do you really think you’re in danger?”

“Not really, I was given notes but when Beau investigated, neither one had anything to do with the other. Okay, enough sad stuff. You’ll get to meet my friend, Rome Lennox. Wynter, he’s single and ready to mingle. He’s partnering with me on Barron’s 12-Year Reserve. He owns these private clubs—”

Wynter chimes in. “Sex clubs? Oh, my God, I’ve been hearing that these are all the rage in the big cities.”

“No, Wynter. You’re such a bad girl. His clubs are sexy and trendy with velvet curtains in the VIP areas. Dancing, and of course top-shelf Bourbon…but not a sex club.”

Footfalls come from the den. Beau has on a tight light-gray performance T-shirt and dark gray sweatpants. I greet him with a smile knowing he’s heard every word. “Hey, handsome.”

“I wanted to remind you that we have a video conference with Ben and his team.” He crosses into the kitchen, leaning down and pecking me on the cheek.

“Aww,” the girls say in unison. Beau blushes just a little.

Wynter gets up from her seat and hugs him. “I’m so happy you two are back together. The world is back on its axis.”

“Thanks, Wyn.”

“Maybe there’s hope for me and….” Wynter’s words die on her lips.

Beau draws her in under his wing. “Scotty. He’s waited a long time, Wyn, but it’s better to have the right person at the right time instead of the wrong time. It wouldn’t have worked back then. You were too much of a rebel.”

“I wish he could come to the ball,” she says hopelessly.

“Sorry. We invited him, but he’s working a wildfire for the Civil Air Patrol,” I say. “Girls, Mr. Taylor is waiting and will take you home. Beau and I need to make a call. I had a great day.”

Beau and I walk them out, and after congratulatory hugs, we wave goodbye before spending the next hour on a conference call with some very fit, serious men.

I think it’s overkill, but I’ll do whatever it takes to have Beau’s eyes on me and only me.

ChapterThirty

BEAU

“You had my heart when you were in pigtails. I thought you had every corner of my heart but somehow, I love you more today than I did yesterday.” My fingers trail her collarbone as I place the emerald necklace around her neck. My fingers skim into her cleavage as I place a teasing kiss under her ear.
