“She isn’t?” Morgan asked in astonishment. “She acted like it.”

“Yes, she has a habit of being a little too…intimate when it comes to my safety, but she’s straight. Married actually, and there is absolutely nothing between us in that way,” she said resolutely, before adding, “She isn’t my type.”Why did she feel the need to be quite so adamant about that?

“Oh, and who is your type?”

The playful smile was back, and Alex clenched her thigh muscles to control the ache.

“I—can we stick to the matter at hand?” Alex asked, internally pleading with herself not to spurt out, you, you’re my type.

“Right.” Morgan sat back and considered things. “I have to admit that this all feels a little surreal. It’s not every day one meets Sasha, and gets a job offer from them, and obviously I am very flattered that someone like you would—" Morgan started to gush until Alex reached out a hand and placed it on top of hers.

“I’m just a person, nobody special or different to anyone else you meet. In fact, I would argue that you, a doctor, might be more important than me.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that.” Morgan blushed, and it might have been the cutest thing Alex had seen in a long while. “But thank you, it means a lot to be appreciated.”

Alex sipped her tea some more and then placed the cup gently back onto the saucer. “So, what do you think? Is it something you’d be interested in?”

“Yes, who wouldn’t be interested? I’m not sure I’d get the time off, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Do you know the dates you’d need me?”

Alex smiled and pulled out her notebook, jotting down the dates she would require Morgan to be available. She ripped the paper from the pad and handed it to her.

Morgan studied it while Alex spoke. “You’d travel with me and Francine. Accommodation would be supplied, of course, and you’d be paid substantially for your time, and you would need to be discreet. If the press got wind that I was still suffering anxiety attacks, the photos of that accident would be all over the front pages again and I can’t—” She smiled sadly. Too much was at stake to throw her off her game. “I want to avoid that, at all costs. You saw for yourself what it triggers for me.”

Morgan nodded; it certainly had been a severe reaction.

“I will think about it for sure. I mean, it would be an experience. I’m just not sure I’d be able to take the time off without explaining it. It would be unusual for any doctor to get that many days annual leave all at once.”

Alex watched her for a moment. There was a hint of genuine interest, but also, a sadness hiding behind the smile. Because she wouldn’t be able to take up the offer, or because it was only a work offer?

She couldn’t quite tell.

This was business, she reminded herself, despite her growing interest in Dr Morgan Kelly. There was no denying shewas beautiful. And now that she’d seen her out of the scrubs and in everyday clothing, she could appreciate the look even more.

Under very different circumstance, despite the age difference, she might have considered making it personal and asking her to have dinner with her, maybe more, but there was a lot at stake, and right now, Alex couldn’t let anything get in the way of what she needed to do.

“Yes, I suppose you’re right. I hadn’t really considered that. Honestly, I thought you’d just turn me down and I could go back to Francine with an ‘I told you so.’” She chuckled at that idea. “With your permission, I can have Francine contact your employers and speak with them. She can be very persuasive.”

“Somehow, I can believe that. Yes, I think that would probably make more sense. They’d at least be more inclined to believe her than me.” Morgan smiled.

“Alright.” Alex glanced at her watch. Morgan needed to go. “Well, thank you for your time, and I’ll have Francine call you to get further details.” Alex stood and held out a hand. When Morgan took it, she felt something ease inside of her. She enjoyed the touch. Maybe a little too much as she kept talking and holding. “Oh, and…it’s Alex.” When Morgan looked confused, she added, “My name. Sasha is my stage name, well, a nickname. My mother calls me that, but I’m Alexandra.”

There was a slowness to the smile Morgan gave her that said a lot more than the words that followed. “Well, it’s been nice talking to you, Alex, Alexandra.”

Morgan forced herself to release her grip and stepped back, reached down for her bag, and smiled.

“I should get going,” Morgan said. “Duty calls.”

“Yes, of course.” Alex watched as Morgan Kelly walked away from her. At the door, she turned and looked back over her shoulder, gave a little wave. Alex waved back, and then Dr Morgan Kelly was gone.

Alex pulled out her phone.

Alex: Hey, did you ever meet someone and just want them?

The answer came back quickly.

Unknown number: All the time. Who did you meet?

Alex: Someone definitely not allowed.
