“No!” I hear the cry but I’m not sure who it comes from as I fall to the dirty pavement, a crushing weight landing on top of me.

LANCE

My knuckles split as they connect with my father’s nose. Blood bursts and his head snaps back. He gives as well as he gets, coming at me with unrelenting punches. I dodge most of them, quicker and fitter than he is. My next blow knocks him out, landing on his back on the grubby carpet. I have enough time to look over at Brent, who sits on top of Keith, his giant hands around the older man’s neck as his lips turn blue.

I’m a little breathless as I grab at my father’s ankle and drag him over to the chair he’d cuffed Elle to. I heave him up off the floor and onto the seat just as Brent comes to my side, wiping blood from the corner of his lip.

“All good?” I ask him.

“Yep.”

I nod and slap my father once, hard across the face to bring him back round. His eyes flutter and roll until he seems to focus and become aware of his surroundings. He looks up to find me and Brent staring down at him with matching disgust.

“Now, why don’t you tell me what this was all about, eh?” I say to him.

He snarls, growling like a dog backed into a corner.

“I have to say, Dad, I’ve been thinking you needed taking care of for a while now with your cliched delusions of grandeur and utterly stupid decisions to associate with The Kukris. But then you went and did something beyond idiotic and brough my woman into this.”

He bares his bloody teeth and spits to the carpet to clear his mouth of the blood coating his gums, but still doesn’t say anything.

“So really,” I continue, bending down to bring myself to his eye level. “You’ve given me no choice but to end you.”

“You don’t have the balls,” he sneers.

I don’t get a chance to respond to that before Brent’s fist hits his eye socket. I look at my cousin with a raised brow and he just shrugs. “Sorry, but I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time, just thought I’d take the chance before you kill him.”

“You were going to let a piece of pussy ruin a deal,” Sydney says, swaying slightly in his seat. “It’s a nice one though, I’ll give you that,” he chuckles to himself.

I slap him again. “Have a little respect,” I spit.

“You’re fucking weak. A useless, pathetic piece of shit. You would rather lose power than hurt your whore’s feelings. You’ll never last leading The Daos. They’ll eat you alive, boy.”

I nod as though I’m resigning myself to his words.

“How do you expect their loyalty when you’ve never shown any yourself?” he spits again, more blood falling to the floor at my feet.

“I have loyalty in spades,” I tell him. “I’m loyal to those who care about me, who love me. To the ones who let me be who I am and not who they expect of me.”

“Love,” he scoffs. “Such a fucking pussy.”

I sigh, tired of this conversation. “Well, now would usually be the time I’d offer you the chance to give me some last words but honestly, I think you’ve spewed enough hate for one lifetime. So, just shut your mouth and listen to what I have to tell you now.”

His face contorts in raging contempt, but I pay him no mind, placing my hands on his shoulders, leaning over him. “The club you’ve been so desperate for is in my name, bought and paid for. But you should know that I’ve gone into business with Annika Wolfe. I feel our partnership will be very beneficial.”

Despite the fact he knows he won’t live to see it, his disgust at the prospect of working with a woman in power has his face reddening. His jaw tightens so hard that bloody saliva pushes through the corners of his mouth.

“I’m going to help her take your friends, The Kukris, down.”

He laughs at that, “That will never work.”

“We’ll see,” I retort but his words have no effect on my resolve.

“And one last thing. Elle is my woman, I love her, I will do anything for her…”

He scoffs, but I cut him off before he can come back with his hatful response.
