"How do I contact Avery?" I shout over to Sawyer who looks at me like I've asked what time it is.

"Not your girl?" Sawyer questions.

I sigh. "Damn it, yes, her number means more but I need a buffer."

Why don't I already have her number?

I know why.

She’d shoot me down the second I’d ask for it. And I’m all about some preservation when it comes to her.

"Give me two minutes."

Sawyer walks away, his cell to his ear, already talking to someone. The man is like James Bond. I never know what thedeal is with him. It feels like the longest hours of my life, I'm sure it's less than a minute before Sawyer hangs up. The moment he looks up is the moment my cell buzzes. I look down and quickly text the first number.

Austin:I'm coming over x

I don't even know if it's okay to put a kiss, I'm going with what feels natural. I wait a beat and then text the second number.

Austin:Where's Mia? It’s Austin!

Instant reply.

Avery:Home. Why?

She doesn't ask how I got her number.I'm about to reply to Avery when Mia texts.

Mia:I'm not home.

Fire burns through my throat. Does she really want to test me today?

Austin:Avery contests that x

Now I wait, but she doesn't leave it too long.

Mia:I'm heading out now!

She won't win in keeping me at arm's length. Protecting her is something I’ve been tasked with, I’ve given myself the task, and I’m not going to fail her. I’d failed him before, I’m not doing it again. Right now, I crave her presence more than I need the calm of the water.

Austin:Heading out is not the same as already being out, M.I.A. ;-) If you're still home, I'm coming to you in fifteen minutes x

I don't like that she doesn't respond. I also don't like not knowing where she's going.

Austin:She's not going to campus, right?

I see the three dots instantly. Thank fuck for technology.

Avery:No. I told her not to go there! My guess would be home!

Okay. I figured her to be local, the accent is one I find sexy, on her. Not that the new information makes me relax any more, but at least she'll be relatively safe away from the gossip.

"So, we need to find the dude and kill him?" Kit slaps his hands against his legs.

"I don't think going to prison works in your best interest," Sawyer retorts. “You’re too pretty.”

"But we need to find him and have words, he can't do this, not to Mia," Lucas rages.

I grunt my approval, appreciating the way my crew bring Mia into the fold. "Water first, killing later."
