"But you've just arrived!" Red stains her cheeks as she fists her hands. I know the gesture very well. I’m leaving so there will be shame on the family. Mom has always been overly concerned with other people’s opinions.

"It was a mistake." Mom has never stood by me, choosing always to side with her husband. If I stay, that will be a mistake. They are each other’s equals when it comes to blame. I hug Amy. She resists at first, but no one can hold back from my hugs. I step away from her. "Come and see me soon."

She nods, knowing she’s lost the battle. I grab my overnight bag and leave. Throwing the bag onto the passenger side, I pull out my cell and text the balm that I need.

Austin:What you up to? X

Way to keep it cool, Austin.I’m completely avoiding the whole podcast shit but I need to see her face, even the scowl she always throws my way is fucking adorable. As much as I'd hardened myself to the way my parents treat me, I haven't done a single fucking thing to deserve the hate they show me. Except one thing... I'd lived.

Every single time I come back here, the memories floor me and the water is usually my place to go. Now it’s Mia.

She’s become my safe place.

How the fuck has that happened?

Mia:I’m busy

I smirk. She’s sexy and stubborn, but I will break the stubborn.

Austin:Too busy for me?

The three dots appear. Then disappear. And then appear again. Warmth floods my chest for the first time since Amy had called me. Mia is finding her response hard. I’m getting to her. Finally!

Mia:I’m watching Netflix…

Austin:Fancy a chat?

Mia:What do you want, Whitlock?

I grind my teeth together. Oh, I’m going to make sure I hear her say my name.

Austin:I like the way you use my last name *growls*

Mia:I won’t do it again!

I click on the button for the video call. I’m going to test her because she’s fascinating to me. Her face fills my screen. Fucking hell. Why is she chewing her pencil like that?

I smile and ignore the way my dick twitches. “Say my last name again.”

“No.”

“It’s just one word, M.I.A.”

She giggles.

Not only does heat flood my dick, it takes over my chest.Win!

I turn the key and smile at the confusion crowding the gorgeous green. She still doesn’t want to melt for me, but I see the cracks.

“I didn’t even know you could drive.”

I reverse the truck, heading back towards the only home I've ever felt happy in. Home is where she is, apparently. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me, M.I.A.” I look directly at her before I put the truck into drive. "What do you wanna know?"
