His eyes follow the outline of my lips before returning to meet my gaze. “Ask the boys, they’ve never seen a woman in my bedroom, other than you…and Avery.”

I don’t know what to say, but any response I may have had skitters away as his thumb brushes my bottom lip. He leans closer. “I wouldn’t, Whitlock.” I quickly come to my senses.

Lightning flashes in his eyes. “Don’t push me, M.I.A.”

I hold my breath, realizing my mistake. I wait. Wait for what? Am I going to let him kiss me?Let him… Iwantto kiss him. Damn it. This is getting messy.

He saves me from making the decision and steps back, leaving the bedroom as I blow out a breath and grab my jeans from the floor.

Talk about sexual tension.

I pull my jeans on and head out into the living room which resembles a scene fromThe Walking Dead. The boys are groaning, eyes half-closed as they reach out towards the coffee offered. Avery is still under the covers on the couch. Nova is helping Austin as Autumn sits on the other couch in some sort of trance. They don't usually rise at this time, they aren't morning people.

"Why do you always have to be up early?" Autumn yawns, her jaw cracking so hard I hear it from the kitchen. She pushes her mermaid teal hair into a hair tie as light green eyes fight sleep.

Sawyer shrugs. "We have to be in earlier because Austin was in Maine and missed practise.”

"Oh, what's in Maine?" Avery mumbles, the words barely distinguishable under the mass.

"Nothing."

I recognize the tone in his voice and now everything inside of me is on high alert. Even Avery pushes her head out of the covers.

"His family," Lucas supplies at the same time as Austin dismisses it.

"What happ?"

"Nothing to worry about," Austin cuts me off.

I hold my silence, squeezing my mug between my hands.

"We need to head out," he grunts.

We watch them gather their stuff and then leave. The crew following the command of their leader in silence.

We stare at each other.

"There's something there," Nova says, twiddling her fawn hair between her fingers.

I nod, and hate that Austin is now interesting on a different level. He’s managed to stir something within me and that’s the last thing I’d wanted.

CHAPTER ELEVEN ¦ WATER

?

Austin

As I open the boathouse doors I don't recall Coach ever giving others the key to this place before, or maybe they hadn't been brave enough to ask. I’ve yet to ask her, and that’s going to take some bravery. I wait for her at the entrance of the two doors, having opened them to allow the cool breeze in. It's cold enough that there's a bite to it. I stand, hands stuffed into my pockets, enjoying the sound of the world waking up. I've always loved this time of day. It's calm. Peaceful. Saying that, the only time I love the rush is on the water.I hate the rush that comes with life.

The sight of her scatters all my thoughts. She looks so peaceful when she runs. A faint blush rushes up her neck the moment she notices me.

"No practice?" she gasps, pulling her buds out of her ears as she slows her pace. I also see that she doesn’t want to slow down. I remember her reaction to me in the bedroom, I’d seen the desire burn against the green, our breaths all but mingling with her lips close enough that I could have had my first taste.

I grin. “Coach gave us the morning off. He tends to be a little nicer the closer we get to the regatta."

“Oh, okay.” She shifts her footing, and that’s yet another thing I like about her. Her shyness contradicts the bite I know she has. “I’d like to ask you on a date.”

The green sharpens. “What?”
