"Coffee, two sugars.” I hold back on her being sweet enough, I don’t need to land in the wet stuff.

She sips, closing her eyes. Her mouth is slightly open and the flush in her cheeks gives me images that make my dick stir.

"Are you able to drink?" she asks, holding my cup.

"I can, but I'll need to let the boat cruise."

She nods. "It's okay when it's moving."

I accept the coffee as we listen to the sound of the boat lapping against the water.

"What's in Maine?"

I don't hide the jerk from her, her clever green eyes see everything. I don't know how to talk about this. I don't have a script in which to lay everything out without freaking her out. She waits. I sigh. "My family are in Maine." That’s an easy response.

"Is that where you called me from?"

I nod, still enjoying the coffee. "From the truck as I'd just left." Nerves moves with the caffeine in my stomach.

She mulls over something, her face completely unreadable. "Was it bad?"

I put the cup down next to me, and again, I go with an honest answer. “It's never good."

The lip nibbling is becoming a problem for keeping my distance.

"Why did you call me?"

I frown. Why is she avoiding the elephant in the room? "I wanted to talk to you."

“Why?” She sighs.

She doesn’t know? How can she not after what happened in her bedroom? I’d wanted her then, crave her more now.

“Because I like talking to you.”

I lean towards her, my finger dips into the dent in her chin. Her eyes pop wide. “You’re making the boat rock!”

“Would you rather the bed?” I add, smirking as her lips part in shock.

Our gazes lock. “Does everything have to come back to sex with you?”

I lift my take-out cup and sip the coffee. “I’ve never wanted someone as much as I want you.”

She frowns and I don’t understand why someone hasn’t made her feel like she’s their world. She already feels like mine.

“Why do you have to confuse me?”

I shrug. “I’m pretty straight forward, Mia, you just need to trust me.”

I see the disbelief flash across her features. What? She thinksI’mcomplicated? Trying to understand what’s going on inside Mia’s head is as clear as rowing through fog, with a blindfold on for good measure.

“Trust doesn’t come easy.”

I nod. “I don’t shy away from challenges.”

“I hate that I’m going to say this because you will do that smirk thing.” She shrugs as I follow through with the smirk. “But if there’s one person I think might break into the circle of trust, it’s you, Austin.”

I grin, the warmth flooding my chest making me wheeze a little. “Mission accepted.”
