When my shift is done, I approach Aldus. “What was tonight’s pay since we didn’t get to discuss it earlier?”

He wipes down the bar counter and doesn’t meet my gaze. “The features get twenty-five hundred dollars.”

I almost choke. “Twenty-five hundred. That’s what I got for tonight?”

“Yeah. It’ll be on your next check.”

“Okay, thanks. I’m heading out.”

“Have a good one.”

It’s in the wee hours of the morning when I return home so I immediately head for the shower, and I’m thankful I can sleep in since I don’t work at the jail until Monday. I’m still surprised I was cleared for any wrongdoing, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Dominick was behind that, too. It seems he has his hands in everything in this city.

After my shower, I don’t bother putting on pajamas and head straight for bed. Thinking about the money I made tonight, it was more than I normally made on a weekend night. I appreciate Dominick putting me on as the feature, but it seems pointless since the regulars know who I am, they just weren’t seeing me strip like normal. I can’t wrap my head around Dominick’s thinking. But I was going to get to the bottom of it.

I wake in the afternoon, dress in a pair of jeans, and a baby pink sweater. Livia left a note on the counter saying she would be gone for the weekend. Which is no surprise there. I drink a cup of hot tea while I look out into the city from my living room window. The weather doesn’t stop for anyone who is hustling and bustling through the busy sidewalks and walkways. I’m thankful to have the busy schedule I do have because I don’t like to just sit still when I can be up doing something. But today, I make an exception and decide to watch mindless TV for a few hours while I clean my kitchen and the tile floors.

My phone buzzes in my back pocket. Retrieving it, I see my mother’s name come up on the screen.

“Hey, mom.” I stand and head to the couch.

“Hey, sweetie. It’s your dad’s birthday tomorrow, and I wanted to see if you would come to have dinner with us to celebrate.”

“Who’s all coming?”

“Well, it will be mostly family of ours. It’s just dinner. And I feel like I haven’t seen you in a long time. We are having some friends over for poker tonight. Want to come?”

“I’ll see you tomorrow for dinner. What time?” I know my mom was just being nice by inviting me for poker night tonight. But I would rather stay home, because Dad’s friends can be a rowdy bunch and tend to be loud.

“Six o’clock.”

“I’ll be there.”

“Okay.”

“See you tomorrow.”

“See you. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I smile at the excitement in my mom’s voice. It is true that I haven’t seen her and dad in some time. I have been trying to get acclimated working two jobs and trying to have a personal life, which a personal life is pretty nonexistent at the moment.

Chapter Ten

DOMINICK

There is a knock on my door. “I got it Belva,” I call out.

Opening the door, I see a familiar face. “Geneva?”

“We need to talk. Sorry I didn’t call first.”

“May I take your coat?”

“Oh, I won’t be staying long.”
