“That’s good you have them as your support system.”

“What about your family? I don’t hear Rowan say anything about them.”

She shrugs and makes a face. “Nothing much to say. Our mom died from an overdose, and even before that, all Rowan and I had was each other. So you can see how we are so close. He always looked after me and refused to ever leave me alone in that trailer with her and her flavor of the week.”

“That sounds rough. I’m sorry.”

The waitress comes to take our order. “What can I get you two?”

I look at Claire. “Can I order for both of us?”

“Sure.”

“Okay, we will have the breaded mushrooms as an appetizer, the chili cheese fries, and two cheeseburgers with two strawberry milkshakes for our meal.”

“Perfect. Coming right up, sugar.”

“Anyway, Rowan and I had it pretty rough, but it made us who we are today.”

“I’m happy to share my family with you.”

“Thank you.”

“What are your plans for the rest of the day?”

“Hanging out at my apartment, maybe see if I can stand watching a movie or something.”

“Well, I have some club business to tend to, but I can come by after if you want. Maybe bring dinner?”

“Sure. But you don’t have to.”

“I’ll call you after, then.”

CHAPTER SEVEN

CLAIRE

Hayden begins to walk me to my door but stops me before I make it up the stairs. “Stop,” he pulls me back and points up at my door.

The word slut painted in big, bold, red letters decorates my door. “Who would do this?”

“Stay out here while I go in and clear it first,” Hayden informs me, but I trail behind him.

My place is an absolute wreck. “Why would anyone do this?” I mutter.

Hayden clears every room and double-checks. “Looks like everything is clear. You have two options. You can come to the club where we can protect you, or I can have Astera or Rowan come stay with you. Which will it be because…”

I cut him off. “I know. You have club business.” I sigh and take a moment to think about the situation. “Let me pack a bag. I’ll be quick.”

I have no choice but to go to the club to be on the safe side. But at the same time, I didn’t want the word SLUT on my door any longer than it needed to be.

As quickly as I can, I pull clothes from my drawers and closet because I wasn’t sure how long I would be staying.

“Okay, I’m ready,” I tell Hayden.

He takes my bag from me, and we head back to the SUV. Inside I am panicking. We rush into the SUV, and Hayden doesn’t waste a second getting back on the road.

“Who do you think did that?” I ask him.
