A choking sound comes from Luther’s throat as he stares at me in shock. “Excuse me?”

“Tomorrow, I will be marrying WinifredBishop. I want the wedding to be at St. Michael’s. Make it look nice. Spare no expense.”

For once, I think I may have actually stunned Luther speechless. His fingers don’t glide along his keyboard as he quickly takes notes. He just stares at me in shock, his mouth hanging open.

I arch an eyebrow, wondering if my requests really elicit this much of a reaction.

Before I can tell him to get it together, he does it himself. He shakes his head, wiping his face clean of all shock. But I can tell he’s still slightly rattled by the way he slowly jots down my demands.

“And should I invite anyone?”

I shake my head. “It’ll be intimate. No extra invitations needed.”

He lets out a slow breath but doesn’t question me any further.

“Will you come back in twenty? I’m going to need you to make a delivery for me.”

“Should I do it now?”

I open up my desk drawer and pull out the expensive stationery with my name etched across the top. I shake my head. “No. I have to write the letter first.”

At the moment, Luther is terrible at hiding his reactions. I don’t blame him. I don’t think I’ve ever asked him to hand deliver a note for me, but there’s a first time for everything. “Back in twenty. Got it.”

“One more thing.”

“Yes?”

“Call every bridal store in Manhattan and set up an open account for me. My future wife needs to buy a dress.”

“On it,” he says, clearing his throat after it breaks at the end slightly.

He stands there, staring at me like he has no idea who I am.

“Luther?” I drag out his name slowly, running my hand along the blank piece of stationery in front of me.

“Yes?”

“That’ll be all.”

Luther nods and scrambles out of my office, leaving me to write a letter to my future wife.

CHAPTER8

WINNIE

My hands shakeas I stare down at the letter in my lap. I’ve read it word for word countless times since it was first dropped off at my apartment last night. I’d been lying on my couch, replaying everything that’s happened to lead me to that moment, when there was a knock on my door.

Winnie,

We don’t know each other well, but I want this wedding to be everything you want it to be given the circumstances. I have started an account with every bridal store in the area. I’ve given them strict instructions to spare nothing when it comes to you choosing the perfect dress for tomorrow. I’m eager to discover what dress you choose.

I hope in time, I can change your mind about trusting me.

I’ll be waitingfor you at the altar.

Yours,

Archer
