I would not have my wife’s name dragged through the dirt with her mother.

It would reflect poorly upon my interests as well, since we were now aligned.

It would also hurt Amelia, and for some reason, that thought made my stomach twist, and I didn’t like it.

She was mine, to fuck, to argue with, and to control.

That also meant she was mine to protect.

From her mother and my father.

My sins would always impact her, but I refused to let the ill-advised lunacy take any toll on her well-being.

CHAPTER 14

AMELIA

I’ve never liked yachts.

I’ve always been one to get terribly seasick, but at least tonight’s party was on a yacht docked in the harbor.

Although there was another reason my stomach was flipping and churning inside.

Luc Manwarring was approaching me.

His piercing eyes locked with mine.

I hadn’t seen him since that night.

The night he took my virginity.

And I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about every second of that night since.

Every. Single. Second.

“Care to dance?” he asked, extending his hand as any gentleman would.

Although I knew his secret. There was nothing gentlemanly about him.

I hesitated for a moment, but his intense gaze was too hard to resist.

I placed my hand in his, and he led me to the dance floor.

As he pulled me closer, I could feel the heat radiating off his body.

His hands were strong and firm on my waist. The music of the waltz swirled around us, and I could feel the tension building between us.

“You look stunning tonight.” His voice was deep, seductive. “I’m pleased to see you’ve chosen something appropriate to wear this time.”

My heart stuttered at his words.

At his subtle reminder of what had happened after my most recent attempt to test his patience with my scandalous dress.

Memories of that night, never far from my mind, came flooding back.

The way he’d punished me, the way he’d touched me, the way he’d demanded my submission and my body, the way he’d made me feel... and then the way he’d left without a word. Something about the way he’d looked at me before leaving made me want to forget all of that. And I had tried hard to forget about him, but it was impossible. Luc had left an indelible mark on my body and my soul.

I could smell his cologne mixed with the salt of the sea.
