Shit! That didn’t sound good. And she was not about to offer her apartment.

“How about here,” she said walking into a coffee shop. It was a public place where he could not get angry without someone calling the cops.

“Fine,” he said and she could tell he would rather be someplace more private.

But what he wanted, she didn’t care about. She wanted a public place where she would feel safe. Not that she thought he would harm her, but if he’d learned about Wyatt, he hopefully would not shout or rage at her here.

The waitress led them to a table in the middle of the room surrounded by people.

“No, not this one,” he told her. “That one over in the corner.”

Could she not get a break today? She wanted the one in the center. She wanted there to be people talking and laughing around her and the noise loud enough that they had a hard time hearing one another.

Right now, she didn’t want to even be here. She wanted to go home and pick up her son.

“All right,” the waitress said and led them to the smaller, more intimate table. It was quieter back in this corner.

They sat at the table and she gazed at him. “How have you been? Funny coincidence you being on my plane today.”

Not really. She would rather have had the rude person they carted off the previous flight than him.

Right now, she was doing her best to be friendly and open to him without telling him anything.

“Great,” he said, “until two days ago when I received a message that one of my old girlfriends was keeping a secret from me. Someone I once loved.”

She started to laugh. Whoever had sent him that message, and it sounded like something her mother would have done, didn’t have their story straight.

“What makes you think it was me? We weren’t boyfriend/girlfriend and you didn’t love me. Why would I send it?”

“I don’t know.” He frowned. “It also said they have a child they don’t want me to know about. We only spent the one night together.”

Oh my goodness, he knew because someone had contacted him. Damn. If it was her mother, she was going to be ex-communicated. But she didn’t know. Only Lauren knew about Wyatt’s father.

Running a hand through his thick dark hair, he gazed at her. “I’ve been to see all my past girlfriends and none of them have had my child. The only other person left is you.”

Nervous laughter bubbled up from her at the thought of him traipsing around to see all his exes. “I bet that was fun. Hey, did you have my kid? How did those conversations go for you?”

“It was embarrassing. Creepy. Frustrating. Did you get pregnant?”

How did she answer him without answering him? She didn’t want him to know about Wyatt and yet she feared he would soon learn the truth.

The waitress came back and poured them each a cup of coffee. Cristina waited until she walked away and then she leaned in closer to him.

“What do you remember about that night?” she asked trying to draw the attention away from the child they shared, knowing that he’d been really buzzed that night. Not drunk, but he’d not driven because he knew he’d had too much to drink. They had taken an Uber to her apartment.

A sigh came from him. “I remember you took my pain away. You made me laugh. We had fun together and the sex was phenomenal.”

So phenomenal that he’d never asked for her phone number or called her.

“And you ran out without saying good-bye. You never even asked for my number. You left while I was still sleeping,” she said. “Doesn’t sound like the sex was phenomenal if you could slink away.”

After a fabulous night, she’d awakened heartbroken that it hadn’t meant anything to him.

Nervously he licked his lips. “You’re right and I regretted it almost immediately.”

“But you never did anything about it. Let’s think about this. You could have said, ‘Hey, thanks for the great fuck. Or thanks for making me smile. Or thanks for the great time.’ But I woke up to an empty bed.”

Never before had she felt so betrayed. So hurt. It was like he’d used her for sex to forget another woman.
