He could see her defenses coming up and she didn’t like the fact that he was doing so much, but he was his father.

“What do your brothers think about him?”

“They will know tomorrow,” he said. “We have a meeting scheduled and I plan to tell them then.”

She gazed at him. “Here are my requirements. You can visit him, you can come see him, but there will be no overnights. All I ask is that you call me in advance and let me know you’re coming. I don’t expect anything from you. You paid your debt with the car and I appreciate that. But nothing else. We were fine before you stepped back into our lives and we will be again.”

That was not what he wanted to hear.

“Cristina, I’m not trying to take him from you. I know how you feel about my money. I was a dick that morning for leaving without waking you or calling you. But I’m truly sorry and I’m doing my best to make amends. Give me a chance.”

A frown appeared on her beautiful face. “For what?”

“Can we just be there for our son? That’s all I’m asking.”

Of course, that probably was a lie. He really wanted more, but he would have to be cautious and take things slow. In that one night, she hadn’t seen how devoted he was to family or his brothers. She needed to know that.

She sighed. “I’m sorry. Those first few months, I hated you for getting me pregnant, but more than anything for leaving without saying good-bye. I didn’t expect anything from that night, but it was fun. And I thought maybe you would call me.”

He’d been so stupid.

“What I did was wrong. Can we please start over and be friends?”

She reached out and touched his hand. “Yes. We have a son together and I don’t want a repeat of my family life for him. Let’s be friends. Let’s just promise to take good care of him. I don’t want to fight you over him.”

“Thank you,” he said.

Relief filled him. Maybe they were making progress.

That night, he carried a sleeping Wyatt up the stairs and laid him in his bed. Cristina covered him with a blanket, and for a moment, they stood there and watched him sleep. Blake was amazed at how sweet and innocent and so damn precious his son was.

Cristina took his hand and pulled him out of the room. With a sigh, he went with her, knowing he wanted both of them. He didn’t want to leave them.

“Time for you to go,” she said. “I have to work tomorrow.”

He nodded. “Be safe. No plane crashes, no unruly passengers.”

A smile flitted across her face. “Agreed.”

There was one other thing he wanted from tonight and then he would leave.

Pulling her into his arms, she slid right where he wanted her. Gazing down at her, he couldn’t resist. It was time.

His mouth moved toward hers with a will of its own and his lips covered hers.

It was a kiss of promises, of regrets, and of things to come in the future if she’d just allow him to love her.

For a moment, she didn’t resist, but then she stepped back out.

“Goodnight, Blake,” she said opening the door. “Talk to you soon.”

Nodding, he knew he had made progress tonight, though he would have liked to have made more. But for now, he was satisfied.

“Goodnight, Cristina, sleep well. I’ll see you next weekend if that’s all right?”

“Goodnight, Blake. I’ll be here,” she said.
