“It’s been tough. I’d marry Cristina tomorrow, but she’s as skittish as a newborn colt.”

Jacob grinned. “Women, they’re wonderful and they’re challenging.”

Blake laughed. “Yes.”

Wyatt gave a squeal and Cristina turned to look at Blake. He blew a raspberry at the baby and he giggled. The sound so precious it made his chest ache.

“Wow, I can’t wait to do this,” Jacob said. “You’re a lucky man.”

Right now, Blake didn’t feel lucky. He wanted to spend time with Cristina. He wanted to get her into his bed. He wanted her to realize how much he wanted her.

“Is he okay?” Cristina asked.

“He’s fine,” he said smiling at her, trying to reassure her that their son was just being playful.

“Let me just warn you that your wife is going to be very protective of that baby,” he told Jacob. “I’ve been surprised at how good of a mother Cristina is and how protective she is of our son. I’d always heard this about women, but believe me, you don’t want to mess with the momma bear.”

Jacob laughed.

“That’s good to know. With Hannah’s family being so vindictive, I’ve been worried. But here on the ranch, she is very protected. Her father is not what I’d call a great example of a decent human being and I worry about her. He’d do anything to get her back.”

At least Blake didn’t have to deal with a terrible father. Cristina’s father had not been great, but he was dead.

“Understand,” Blake said thinking about how he really would like to know who sent the letter just so he could warn them to back off and never do something like that again.

The two women were gazing inside a little trailer that Hannah said was her studio. Blake wondered if Cristina would like something like that to paint in. He wanted to give her the moon, the stars, and everything she desired.

Maybe once they were married, he’d build her a she-shed to paint in.

Laughter came from the women and he stared at the woman he was falling in love with. No, they hadn’t kissed but once, and nothing like how he wanted to kiss her. But she was such a strong, independent woman and he loved how she took such great care of Wyatt.

“Oh, here they come,” Jacob said.

Cristina was carrying a painting. It was gorgeous and she was beaming.

“Blake, Hannah gave me this beautiful painting. I’m going to hang it in the living room.”

He wished she meant his living room, but he knew she was talking about her dumpy apartment. Though he would never tell her his opinion of the place.

“Thank you, Hannah,” Cristina said. “This means so much to me. And thank you for your encouraging words.”

The woman smiled. “You’ve got this. With Blake’s help, you’ll soon be able to spend more time painting and I’ll be taking care of our little one.”

“Yes,” Cristina said smiling. “We better go. You’ve been on your feet for the last hour and you probably need to rest.”

“Please come back,” Hannah said. “I’m out here in the boonies, and while I love it here, it would be so great to talk to another artist.”

Blake was so happy these two seemed to hit it off so well. This was exactly what he’d hoped for. This way when Cristina finally moved to his place, she would have a friend.

“We will,” Cristina said and he hoped she meant him and her, not her and Wyatt.

Picking up the carrier, he carried Wyatt to the truck.

“Thanks again,” Cristina called.

He waved to Jacob. “Good luck.”

“Thanks,” he said. “You too.”
