“Who lives there?”

“That’s where my oldest brother, Adrian, lives,” he said.

Every hundred yards, one of his brothers had a house. After they won the lottery, they had planned a master layout where each was going to build a house. Not too close together, but far enough away they could raise their families in privacy and come together when they wanted.

Her car sat out in front of his house.

He pulled the truck into the garage and over far enough to put her car in as well, and then he jumped out and helped her down before he pulled Wyatt out of the truck.

The baby smiled at him and blew him a raspberry.

“Damn, buddy, you’re just too stinking cute,” he said. “I’m going to spoil you rotten.”

He kicked his legs, flailed his arms, and grinned up at Blake. He liked to think that the baby was starting to recognize him and he would love nothing better than to hear him say dada.

“Someone is going to be getting hungry soon,” she said. “Tonight, I thought I would just give him a quick sponge bath, put his pajamas on him, and then give him one last bottle for the night.”

So far things were going exactly like he’d hoped.

“While you do that, I’ll get our dinner ready. If it’s nice, we can sit outside,” he said.

Susan, their housekeeper had been in their family for years, and she’d promised him she would cook enough for them as well tonight. Most of the time, he didn’t ask her to cook for him, but tonight was special.

Thirty minutes later, Cristina walked into the kitchen. “Wyatt’s down for the night.”

He should have gone in and kissed him goodnight, but now he didn’t want to disturb him.

“Good, dinner is ready,” he said. “You grab the ice tea and I’ll carry our plates out.”

They walked out the big glass doors that led to the patio. When the mosquitos had gotten bad, he’d had the patio enclosed. There was an outdoor gas fireplace and while it was a warm, muggy night, he liked the ambiance of the fire.

“Oh, this looks so good,” Cristina said as she set the glasses on the table.

They sat and began to eat. “Did you have fun today?”

“Yes, I’m in awe at what she’s accomplished. It gives me hope,” she said.

She’d brought out the baby monitor so she could hear Wyatt if he woke up.

“Tomorrow, my brother has a barbecue planned. You’ll get to meet all of my brothers except Cody who is at training camp. We won’t see him until after Christmas.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting them,” she said. “Are they going to accept Wyatt as their nephew? What should I expect? I won’t accept anyone hurting him.”

Laughter bubbled up from his chest. “They will spoil him rotten. At first, they didn’t believe I had a son and then I showed them pictures. Now they’re certain he’s mine. Plus, the DNA results came back. He’s my son.”

“Told you so,” she said teasing.

“I knew the moment I saw him,” he said.

Lightning flashed across the western sky. That wasn’t good.

Since his parents’ deaths, he did not like storms. They reminded him of everything he’d lost or could lose again. In fewer than five minutes, everything could be gone.

When they finished their meal, she carried the plates into the kitchen and then returned. “Do your brothers think we’re sleeping together?”

Not yet.

“No,” he said. “I told them we were becoming friends. People who shared a common interest.”
