“Then why is she coming here?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve seen her since we broke up. Stay here with me and protect me from her.”

A grin spread across her face. “I really should get Wyatt and get on the road. I think you’re quite capable of handling this woman.”

“As soon as we’re done talking to Taylor,” he said.

A frown filled her face. “All right.”

When the car came to a stop, everyone at the table stopped talking and stared.

“She’s got a lot of nerve coming out here,” Garth said.

“She probably wants money,” Dakota replied beneath his breath.

“Nah, she’s just trying to stir up trouble between Blake and Cristina,” Evan said.

Blake listened to his brothers and couldn’t help but think they had grown into smart, young men who knew how to spot a gold digger and not one had mentioned that word with Cristina.

“Blake,” she said, stepping out of her fancy top-of-the-line pickup. She walked toward him and his insides clenched. What did this bitch want from him?

“Hello, everyone,” she said, wearing stilettos as she tried to cross the yard to him, her heels sinking into the wet earth. She almost fell into Adrian’s lap and Madison gave her a look that could have singed the paint off a wall.

“Blake, I was going to tell you about this, but you hung up on me this morning,” she said.

A snicker came from Garth.

“I thought you should see this,” she said and handed him a newspaper.

Blake stared in disbelief at the photo of Cristina carrying Wyatt down the stairs of her apartment. Who the hell was taking photos of her and his son?

“They wrote an article about how you have a son that you just learned about. I wanted to warn you so that you could put out a statement or something. You need to get ahead of this scandal.”

She turned and saw Cristina with Wyatt in his carrier. “Oh, you must be the mother.”

“Yes, I am,” she said, not at all happy.

Glancing at the photo, Cristina groaned.

“Anyway, I’m on my way to a dance tonight and I just wanted to stop by and give you this paper since I knew you didn’t take the Oakdale Journal.”

Why was she being nice to warn him? Had she put the article in the paper?

“Taylor,” he said frowning. “Why would you do this? Bring the newspaper out here to warn me?”

A grin spread across her face. “Because I wanted you to see I’m not the bitch you think I am. And if you ever want to call me again, I’d be thrilled.”

Cristina tensed beside him.

He gave a chuckle. “Taylor, you’re the past. My future is standing next to me.”

She shrugged. “Good luck. And, Cristina, you’re going to need security. The press is waiting for you.”

CHAPTER 19

The drive from Blake’s ranch back to town had taken over an hour with slow-moving traffic. Before she left, it had taken Cristina thirty minutes to convince Blake that he didn’t need to follow her to make certain there would be no reporters waiting for her when she got home. And thank goodness they weren’t there.

When she walked into the apartment, she gazed around and everything was as it should be. This was her little home. A small one-bedroom, one-bath apartment that she knew soon she would outgrow, but for now, it fit her and Wyatt.
