When she called into her supervisor, the woman sighed. “Cristina, you are so close to being let go. It’s been noted in your file that you were on the news. And the airline has received questions about you.”

“I can’t help that,” she said. “The reason I can’t come in today is because reporters have been hanging out at my son’s daycare. They no longer want him because of the notoriety. I’ve got to find a new daycare and a new place to live.”

And that was only the half of it. She also needed to find a lawyer to work with Blake’s lawyer to keep him from getting more than his share of her son.

“Oh dear,” her supervisor said. “I’m going to mark you out for the rest of the week. I think you need a break to get your life in order.”

Right now, she didn’t care. During this time, she would do her best to find a new place to live with security that she could afford.

“Thank you,” she said, knowing she was close to being fired but unable to do anything about it.

Backing out, she left the daycare and returned to her apartment. This time though instead of going to her unit, she knocked on Mrs. Anderson’s door.

“Oh, dear,” Mrs. Anderson said when she saw the crowd of reporters in the parking lot. “Get in here.”

“Thank you,” she said. “There’s something I need to ask you.”

All night, she’d thought about this and knew she had to find out who had sent Blake the letter. Who was the person she felt had betrayed her?

“Did you send Blake a letter telling him that Wyatt was his son?”

The woman laughed. “Dear, I had no idea who his father was. And before you ask, no I did not contact the media and tell them to come camp out in our parking lot. I would never do that. They’ve been real dogged and a pain in the ass.”

Relief filled Cristina. Maybe she was crazy, but for some reason, she’d truly believed this woman had contacted Blake. But that only left her good friend Lauren and her mother. Why would Lauren betray her and then lie about it?

“I’m sorry to have bothered you,” she said. “I’m going to have to move. That’s the only way I can escape these people.”

The woman nodded. “I understand. And no, I won’t tell them where you go.”

Good, but Cristina wasn’t going to tell anyone where she was moving.

The woman reached out and touched Wyatt’s cheek. “You are one handsome little boy. There are going to be a lot of hearts broken by you.”

Cristina grinned, she knew it was true. Her son was so cute.

“Thanks, Mrs. Anderson. I’m going to leave for a little while, if you see anyone try to get into my apartment, call the police,” she said.

The woman shook her head. “Damn nuisance is what these people are.”

Cristina walked to the door and gazed out. Two men stood near her car. With a sigh, she opened the door and they ran toward her.

“Miss Howard, just a few minutes of your time,” they called.

She ignored them and put Wyatt in the back of the car, taking the time to make certain he was hooked in tightly.

Then she crawled into her vehicle. Since Lauren was at work, Cristina would have to speak to her own mother.

When she pulled up, she glanced around. No reporters. At least they had not discovered her mother yet.

She met her at the door. “Why aren’t you at work?”

“I took the rest of the week off. A man tried to kidnap Wyatt the day before yesterday,” she said. “We’ve had reporters hanging out at the apartment, and this morning, the daycare suspended him because of the reporters there. So I have no daycare, my neighbors are ready for me to move so the reporters aren’t always there, and I’m close to being fired from my job. All because someone sent Blake that letter.”

Her mother sighed and then took Wyatt out of her arms. She followed her into the house. “Maybe you should marry the man.”

Something about the way she said it had Cristina gazing at her. “And be as happy as you and Dad were? No, thank you.”

Her mother sat at the kitchen table and Cristina fixed herself some coffee.
