Good thing it’s in the rear view mirror

Chad

Kind of out of left field, but I was wondering if you wanted to go get dinner sometime?

Why this question makes my ears hot, I have no idea. It’s not the kind of heat I feel around Owen. It’s a preemptive embarrassment because I haven’t been the most successful dater.

I realize this makes my podcast hypocritical, but I liken this to, say, a basketball coach. Some of the best coaches could never play professionally in their sport, but they understand how the sport works and how to make their players better at it.

That’s me. I understand how relationships work. I can even troubleshoot how to make them better. But for whatever reason, I haven’t quite figured out how to make one work for me.

Maybe this is my chance.

Maybe I should give Chad Rober a real, honest-to-goodness shot. There will be no sparks or fireworks. Only good, old-fashioned dating.

Emmy

That sounds fun!

Chad

. . .no way, really?

That’s awesome!

I smile to myself at his sincerity.

Emmy

I’m free this weekend?

Chad

Great! How’s Friday?

Emmy

Perfect! Pick me up at the store?

Chad

I’ll swing by around 7!!

His overuse of exclamation points notwithstanding, he seems to be a perfectly normal human.

And that’s what I’ll choose.

Emmy

Looking forward to it!

I do a quick gut-check.

No butterflies.

No hum.

No bodice-ripping scenes playing in my head.
