It’s perfect. He’s perfect. We’re perfect.

“So, we’re not studying tonight, right?” I ask with a grin.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Owen

Six months later

I’m nervous.

I don’t usually get nervous about anything, but I am about this.

It’s been months since I took the test. The results are due any day.

Haven’t seen them yet.

But I have seen Emmy. A lot.

Ever since the night on the dock, Emmy and I have been nearly inseparable.

Dates at DeLucca’s, often with Jace and Mack—weird at first, but pretty normal now. My sister and my best friend are a good match. He doesn’t put up with her crap, and somehow, I think he even chills her out.

That last bit sounds familiar.

We’ve recorded three podcast episodes, Emmy and I.

Practical vs. Hopeful.

And by now, I think we’re both seeing there’s more than one version of romance. Or maybe it’s just one version with two different sides.

I looked for test results yesterday. Still nothing, email or regular mail.

I’m nervous.

Emmy helped me study for the lieutenant test for weeks, and after just a few months, I felt ready to take it, even if most of our study sessions devolved into studying each other.

It also didn’t hurt that I managed to retain a lot of information from when I studied to take the test before I came to Harvest Hollow. That meant I didn’t need as long to prepare. But when it comes to taking tests, I’ll always worry I didn’t study enough.

And yet, everything made sense, thanks to the accommodations.

I had to have passed, right?

We’ve spent a lot of time house hunting for me, and I moved into my new place a few months ago. An old craftsman, just like I wanted. It’s nothing fancy, but it does have Emmy’s touches all over it. It’s a little bigger than her house, and there’s even a room that would be perfect for her home studio.

A place I think someday might be ours.

Harvest Hollow has become home all over again. I know that’s partly due to the town, but mostly due to Emmy. I’ve been working on proving myself to the people here, at least the ones who knew me before. It’ll take time, I think, for some of them to come around, but I’m committed to this place now. And to Emmy.

It’s a normal Tuesday, and when I get off my shift, I get a text.

Emmy

Hey, can you swing by the shop on your way home?

Owen

I was planning on it.
