“Owen, what in the world. . .?”

I give Emmy’s hand a tug, over under the streaming light of the streetlamp in front of Book Smart. “I’ve been wanting to do this for months.”

She laughs. “You’ve been waiting to act like a crazy person?”

I shake my head, offering her my hand, bowing ever so slightly like a prince in one of her fairy tales. “May I have this dance?”

She goes still, watching me. “You want to dance in the rain?”

I smile. She slips her hand in mine, and I pull her close, placing my other hand on the small of her back, exactly the way Liz posed us the day of the photoshoot.

“I don’t need romance, Owen,” she says, resting her free hand on my shoulder. “All I need is you.”

I lean down and kiss her. “Well, that’s good, because you’re stuck with me now.”

She rests her head on my chest, and we dance in the rain, right in the middle of Maple Street.

And even I can admit, there’s something to it. Something sort of magical. So, while she may not need romance, I’m still going to find ways to give it to her.

Because love really does make fools of us all.

And I’ll be happy to be a fool for Emmy for the rest of my life.

THE END
