The nerve.

Better TV? Better TV? I start to slam out a response in all caps, but then stop mid-text.

Just breathe.

Calm down.

I’m not going to let Lindsay put Emmy on TV and make her cry.

Yeah, still protective of her. Not sure how to shake that.

Owen

No. The bookstore or nothing.

Time?

Lindsay

Fine. I’ll work some editing magic, I guess.

2 PM. That’ll give me time to get it ready to air tonight.

Owen

I’ll let Emmy know.

I start a new text to Emmy.

Owen

2 PM at Book Smart work for you?

Emmy

Yep.

Owen

See ya then.

When she doesn’t respond, I head back to my truck, get in, and fling the phone on my front seat.

I want to fix things; I want to help; I want a lot of things—but just like Emmy’s house, it’s going to take some time.

Emmy

Owen and Lindsay, back to texting.

Because of course they are.

Maybe they do belong together. Maybe this will be a rekindling of their relationship.

Just like in Our Hill of Stars, the time-slip novel by Chloe Barker, when Juliette and Christopher discover that they’re looking at the same night sky from the same seaside hill but in different centuries, Owen and Lindsay are connected despite time and distance, once again.

And I’m Phoebe Sutherland, the goofy, slightly unattractive, sidekick character who’s in like two scenes in the book.

It’s a stark reminder that I need to have clear, non-hopeless romantic eyes when looking at Owen. Between the house, the podcast, and Book Smart, I have plenty to keep me busy, and I’m glad for it.
