Was he worried I wouldn’t be his friend anymore?
“And you’ll stop being a weirdo?”
I press my lips together. “No promises.”
He smirks, that full smile always just out of reach. “For what it’s worth, I am sorry I left that day. Without saying anything.”
I go still. I believe him. “And I’m sorry I told you—” I can’t even say it. It’s so embarrassing. “You know.”
“Yeah, I know.” He nods. “Can I walk you home?”
I scrunch up my face at him. “Friends again, huh?”
He shrugs and doesn’t say anything.
Classic Owen.
Friends.
Well.
It’s a start.
Chapter Sixteen
Owen
“Captain wants to see you.”
Jace is at the door of the firehouse when I arrive.
“Again?” I frown. “Why?”
“Probably wants to pin a medal on you or something.” Jace smirks. “You’re making the rest of us look bad.”
I drop my bag off in my room, then head into the captain’s office. I find him sitting at his desk, wearing reading glasses and working on the computer.
He looks up and takes off the glasses. “Larrabee.”
“Sir.”
“Sit.”
I do as I’m told.
“Did you check on the girl?”
“Emmy?” I prop my leg on my other leg at the ankle. “Yes.”
“And?”
I doubt he wants to know about our little chat at the pond, but it’s the first thing that comes to mind. Emmy caught me off-guard last night.
There’s something refreshing about a woman who likes herself.
I’m guessing that’s not what the captain is asking.
“She’s good, I think.”
