“I’m happy for you, Dad. I’m really tired. I’m going upstairs to lie down.” I stood up. “Give me some time to think about things. Okay?”

“Okay, sweetheart,” he spoke with sadness in his eyes.

While lying down, I heard the front door open and close. Carter came upstairs, climbed on the bed beside me, and held me tight.

“Are you okay, babe?”

“Yeah. I’m fine.” I sighed.

“He seems like a good man, Zoe.”

“He is, and I understand everything he’s been through and why he did what he did. He couldn’t handle his PTSD, and he did me a favor by leaving. I always knew that. That’s why I just accepted it when he would pop in and out of my life the way he did. Who knows. Maybe someday we can reconnect. But right now, I only want to focus on you and our baby.”

“I love you, Zoey Kind.”

“I love you, too, Carter. By the way, we’re naming our daughter Primrose. Primrose Kind.”

“The hell we are.” His grip around me tightened, and I silently smiled.

When Carter walked into the nursery, I was putting some baby clothes away.

“How are my beautiful girls.” He kissed my lips and kissed my belly.

“We’re good. How was your day?” I wrapped my arms around his neck.

“It was good. I missed you.”

“I missed you too.” I smiled.

“Are you hungry?” His lips met mine.

“Starving.” I felt something streaming down my legs.

“Uh, Zoe. Did you just pee on my shoes?”

I looked down. “Shit. I think my water just broke.”

“You’re not due for another week.”

“I guess our daughter is ready to come now. You go change. I’m going to sit on the toilet and call Georgia.”

I dialed Georgia’s number.

“Hey, you. What’s up?” she answered.

“Are you home?”

“No. I’m just leaving the hospital. Why?”

“You might want to stay. My water just broke.”

“Oh, my God. I’m walking back in. Are you on your way?”

“We will be in a few.”

“Okay. Are you having any contractions?”

“No. Nothing.”
