“Okay.” He chuckled as he turned and headed towards his car.

“I will use this if I have to. I’m just putting that out there.” I followed behind.

“I have no doubt you will, stranded girl. By the way. If you have an iPhone, grab it, and you can use the charger in my car.”

I ran back and grabbed my phone. We climbed into his Bentley, and as soon as he started it, he put the air conditioning on full blast.

“God, that feels good.” I plugged my phone into the charger.

CHAPTER 4

Carter

I couldn’t help but smile as she leaned forward and placed her face mere inches from the air vent. When I was driving down the highway and saw a young woman who stood about five foot seven, with her hair in a high ponytail, wearing a pair of khaki shorts, a black tank top, long, lean legs, and oversized sunglasses, I had no choice but to stop. I would have stopped for anyone who needed help, but she made it extra easy. When she took off her sunglasses, and I saw her gorgeous blue eyes, I wouldn’t lie and say my heart didn’t beat a little faster.

“I like your car,” she said.

“Thanks.” I smiled. “You said you were on your way to your new apartment. Where is that?”

“Why?” Her right eye narrowed.

“Just trying to make small talk while we wait for the tow truck to arrive.”

“I’m moving to Los Angeles from Sacramento. I have big plans here.”

“Oh yeah? What kind of plans?”

“Just plans.” A smile crossed her lips. “What is it that you do, Carter?”

I sat and stared at her for a moment. She wasn’t willing to tell me anything about herself, so I would extend the same courtesy and not tell her a thing about me.

“I work.”

“No, duh. What do you do for work?”

“Just work.” I smiled.

Suddenly, the tow truck pulled up. She flew out of the car and over to the burly man who climbed out.

“You called for a tow?” he asked her as I walked up.

“Yes. Can I ride with you wherever you’re taking my car?”

“Sorry, ma’am. There isn’t any room. I have my partner with me.” He pointed to the passenger side of the truck.”

“Well, what am I supposed to do? You can’t leave me stranded here.”

“Isn’t this guy with you?” He pointed at me.

“No. He just stopped to see if I needed help. I don’t even know him.”

“I’ll take you wherever you need to go,” I said. “I wouldn’t leave you stranded here.”

“There’s a rental car place down the road from the auto shop,” the tow truck driver spoke. “I would suggest you rent a car until this car is fixed.” He looked at his watch. “They close in thirty minutes. I’m not sure you’ll make it in all this traffic.”

“Great.” She sighed as she placed her hand on her forehead.

“We’ll make it.” I smiled. “Come on. I have to make a phone call first.” I pulled my phone from my pocket and called Shaun.
