“How many days will you be needing it?” The woman glanced at her watch.

“At least five. Listen, lady. I know you’re closing, and I’m sorry I disrupted your plans to get out on time, but I’m in a bind here.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“I’ll need your driver’s license,” she said.

After Zoey handed the woman her license, she turned to me.

“Thank you for your help, but you can go now.”

“You’re welcome. Maybe you can thank me by having dinner with me.” I smiled.

“Oh, you sly dog, you.” She pointed at me. “I appreciate the offer, but I think my words were good enough.”

“So, I take it that’s a no?” I spoke.

“If you understand English, then yes.” A smile crossed her beautiful lips.

“Okay. Good luck to you and your big plans in Los Angeles. It was nice to meet you, stranded girl.” I placed my hand in my pocket and walked out the door.

Climbing into my car, I pulled out of the parking lot and headed back to the office.

CHAPTER 5

Zoey

“Here’s the key,” the woman behind the counter handed it to me. “It’s the black car parked right over there,” she pointed.

“Thank you.”

“I wouldn’t have turned that man’s dinner invitation down,” she said.

I smiled at her as I walked out the door. Climbing into the car, I headed down the road to the auto shop. Carter was a sexy, nice guy, and I would have accepted his dinner invitation if the circumstances had been different. But the last thing I needed was to get involved with a guy.

I pulled into the auto shop and saw Finnick sitting there. Walking over to him, I started transferring my belongings to the SUV.

“Is that your car?” An older gentleman walked over with a clipboard in his hands.

“Yes. Any idea when it’ll be fixed?”

“We’re a little backed up, but I’ll look at it tomorrow and call you. I need you to fill this paperwork out.”

I filled out the paperwork with my name and number and handed him the clipboard. After my things were in the rental car, I placed my hand on Finnick.

“Be a good boy while they get you fixed up.”

I climbed into the rental car and drove to my new apartment. When I stepped inside, I looked around the small space. It would do for now until I got my business up and running. That was my priority and main focus. After bringing up my belongings from the car, I unpacked a few things, poured myself a glass of wine, and started the bath water. As I was unwinding in the hot, bubbly water, my thoughts went to the man who stopped to help me today. There was something about his smile that gripped me. Grabbing my phone, I called my friend, Cara.

“Hey, you. I’ve been waiting for your call. How’s L.A.?”

“Finnick decided to die on my way here.”

“Oh no, Zoe. I’ve been telling you for months that you need to trade Finnick in for something new.”

“I know.” I sighed. “The mechanic said he’ll take a look at him tomorrow.”

“What are you going to do? Did you at least get a rental car?”
