“No.” His tone was serious.

“You’re a liar.” I smiled.

“Fine. I do, but I would prefer you slept next to me naked. Let’s try it, and then you can let me know what you think.” He held out his arm.

I snuggled into his body and took in the warmth and his scent as my head lay on his chest.

“Well? Do you still want one of my T-shirts?”

“No.”

“I didn’t think so.” He chuckled.

“Can I ask you something?”

“What is it?” His fingers deftly moved up and down my arm.

“What did your Aunt Barb mean when she said you looked well and asked if you were keeping up with your doctor’s appointments?”

“I wondered when you were going to ask me. It’s a long story.”

I quickly sat up and covered myself with the sheet. “I’m not tired.”

He glanced at the clock. “It’s one a.m., and I have to be up in five hours to meet my brothers and cousins down at the beach to surf. How about I tell you about it tomorrow?” He brought his hand up to my cheek.

“You surf too?”

“I do.” He smiled. “I’ll try not to wake you when I get up.”

“Just answer me this. Are you sick or something?”

“I was, but I’m better now.”

I snuggled back into him and laid my head on his chest as his arm tightened around me.

“Goodnight, Zoey.”

“Goodnight, Carter.”

I opened my eyes, rolled over, and saw that Carter wasn’t there, but a neatly folded navy blue T-shirt was on his pillow. I smiled as I grabbed it and slipped it over my head. Walking downstairs, I went into the kitchen and over to the built-in coffee maker. I noted the to-go cups sitting in the corner next to the container of coffee beans. Either he took coffee to work every morning in his to-go cups, or they were for the women who spent the night before he kicked them out the door. I opted to open the cabinet above the coffee maker and use a mug.

I wanted to make breakfast, but he only had one egg in the carton. I opened the door to his pantry and stared at the sparse space. The one thing I noticed was the several cans of pineapple chunks sitting on the shelf. I furrowed my brows and sighed as I grabbed two cans and a few other ingredients I was surprised he had. The whole canned pineapple thing made me shudder. Forty-five minutes later, the sliding door opened, and Carter walked in.

“Morning. I didn’t expect you to be up already,” he said. “Honestly, I thought maybe you would have already left.”

“And deprive you of the chance to pour me a cup of coffee in one of those to-go cups and push me out the door?” I smiled.

“That’s not what?—”

“You’re a liar.” I pointed at him. “That’s exactly what those cups are for. Actually, it’s a brilliant idea, and I think I might get some for my place.” I grinned.

He stood on the other side of the island and narrowed his eyes at me.

“What is that smell?” he asked. “It smells delicious.”

“Breakfast,” I said as I sipped my coffee.

“Breakfast? I didn’t have anything here to make.”
