He didn’t reply to my last text, and I didn’t care. Julia walked over and handed me my coffee.

“Cheer up, Zoey. You’ll get this figured out.” She sat across from me and placed her hand on mine. “Did you see that Stefan’s crew is working next door?”

“Yeah. I saw the trucks in the parking lot.”

“Isn’t that exciting?” She smiled.

“It should be, but I only have enough money to pay them for their work and some of the equipment. If I don’t get a business loan, it’s going to sit empty.”

“You’ll get one,” she said, gently squeezing my hand.

“Can I ask a favor?” I said to her.

“Of course.”

“Can I bake Grayson’s and Gabriel’s cake at your house? The kitchen in my apartment is way too small, and I don’t trust that oven.”

“I have a better idea. You can bake the cake in Sebastian’s kitchen at Four Kinds. He’ll be there all morning cooking the food for the party. That way, he can have his people bring the cake when they bring the food.”

“You don’t think he’ll mind?”

“Oh my, God. Not at all.” She grabbed her phone “I’ll call him.” She dialed his number and put it on speaker.

“Hey, Jules,” Sebastian answered.

“Hey, Sebastian. Would you mind if Zoey used the kitchen at Four Kinds to bake the boy’s birthday cake?”

“Not at all. She can use my kitchen whenever she wants.”

“Excellent. She’s here at the coffee shop now.”

“Ask her to stop by, and I’ll show her around.”

“Thanks, Sebastian. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Later, Jules.”

“See.” Julia grinned. “Finish your coffee and then go to Four Kinds.”

“Thanks, Julia. You’re the best.”

“You’re welcome. And don’t worry about the loan. It’ll all work out.”

CHAPTER 20

Carter

What plans did she have? And with whom? She didn’t know anyone here. I wasn’t going to text her, but I wanted to see her. I closed my briefcase, grabbed my suit coat, and headed home for the night.

Julia walked through the sliding door, holding Elijah as I poured a scotch.

“Hey.” I smiled as I set my glass down. “Hey, little man.” I took him from her.

“Have you talked to Zoey today?” Julia asked.

“Just a couple of text messages. I asked her to dinner, and she said she had plans. Why?”

“The bank denied her a business loan.”
