“You’re a liar.” I smirked. “Confess, Zoey.”

“Fine. They tortured me until I spilled the beans. It was awful, Carter. I was so scared.”

I laughed as I shook my head.

“Go take them on a tour.” I kissed her forehead. “I’ll show my brothers around.”

“Did you know that when you kiss a woman on her forehead, you’re letting her know that you’ll always be there for her and love her with all of your heart?” Grayson glanced at me as I started the boat.

“Stop being a douchebag. No, it doesn’t.”

“It sure does. And I saw you kiss Zoey’s forehead.”

“You’re making shit up, bro.”

“Ask Ella.” He chuckled. “She’s the one who told me, and you know damn well that kid is never wrong.” He patted my shoulder.

Once we reached a good area in the open water, we tied the boats together and got the party started.

“Exceptional boat,” Carter.” Aunt Barb smiled. “It was very thoughtful of you to surprise your brothers on their birthday.”

“Thanks, Aunt Barb. I have many birthdays to make up for.”

“It wasn’t your fault, darling. Your father was a very broken man back then. To be honest, your mother did the right thing. It’s exactly what I would have done.” She smiled. “What’s going on between you and Zoey? I heard your company has invested in her bakery.”

“Nothing is going on between us. We’re friends, Aunt Barb.” I brought the beer bottle to my lips.

“I’ve been around a long time, Carter, and I know when there’s something there between two people. I know you’ve been hurt in the past, but when two people are meant to be together, there’s no stopping it. Ask your brothers and cousins.”

“Hey, you two.” Zoey smiled as she walked over. “We’re going to do the cake soon.”

“Speaking of,” Aunt Barb said. “Have you figured out your employee situation yet?”

“Not yet,” Zoey said. “It’s been weighing on my mind, though.”

“Let me take some of the weight off. I want to work for you at the bakery.” Aunt Barb smiled.

“Oh, really?” Zoey asked with a confused look.

“Aunt Barb, aren’t you busy enough?” I asked.

“Not these days, Carter. I think a part-time job at a bakery would be fun. Besides, I have a ton of rich friends who will come in and spend a lot of money.”

“I think it’s a great idea.” Zoey grinned. “Welcome to Baked With Love, Barb.” She hugged her.

“Thank you, darling. I’ll be the best employee you’ll ever have.” She smiled. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to tell Curtis.”

“Why were you hugging my mother?” Simon asked as he walked over.

“Your mom is going to work at the bakery.” I smirked.

“Are you crazy?” his low voice spoke as he stared at Zoey. “Do I need to call Jackson over here and have him schedule you a CT scan?”

Zoey laughed. “She’ll do fine.”

“You don’t understand. This is what she does. She’s interested in something, gets bored, and moves on to something new. Right now, your bakery is her flavor of the month.”

“If she quits, then I’ll hire someone to replace her. I’m not worried.” Zoey smiled as she walked away.
