“Did she ever mention to you what her past relationships were like?”

“The only one I know of is a guy named Quinton. She broke up with him right before she moved here because he cheated on her.”

“Then she has trust issues like you.” She smirked.

“I don’t think so. She said she purposely sabotaged that relationship by not making time for them, hoping he’d cheat. She said it was her way out without looking like the bad guy.”

“How long were they together?”

“About six months.” I took a bite of pasta.

“She briefly told us that her grandparents raised her because her mom was always off partying, and her dad left her because of some issues he had. She didn’t really go into detail. But I’m suspecting that when things begin to get comfortable in her life, she runs.”

“Sounds like someone else I know.” Conner smirked at me.

“She’s most likely scared of losing control of her life. As a child, she couldn’t control her parents abandoning her. She depended on them like every child does. But when those needs aren’t met, people put up a wall of fear, and this need for control takes over. She fears losing control over her life if she allows herself to depend on someone else. Her parents seriously hurt her, and she won’t let herself be hurt again.”

“I can understand that, but I don’t care. She belongs with me, in my life, and I’m getting her back.”

“There’s my cousin.” Conner grinned and patted my back. “I’m proud of you.”

“You need to express your fears as well to her, Carter,” Charlotte said. “You have to be raw and open, no matter how hard it is for you.”

“I know. The problem is it’s too easy for her to walk away every time I see her.”

“I got you,” Conner said as he picked up his phone from the table.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Sending a group text to the guys for an emergency family meeting. We’ll all figure out what to do together.”

CHAPTER 29

Carter

After I helped clean up the dishes, I kissed Charlotte’s cheek and thanked her.

“You’re welcome. We love Zoey and want her back just as much as you do.” She smiled.

“Come on, Princess. Let’s go make some magic happen with your cousin Carter.” Conner picked Isabella up and opened the sliding door.

“She needs a bath, Conner,” Charlotte said.

“She needs her daddy more, babe.”

I smiled at Charlotte as she stood there shaking her head.

“What’s with the emergency family meeting?” Sam asked as we sat down around the bonfire.

“Carter finally came to his senses and wants Zoey back,” Conner said. “We need to make sure that happens.”

“And another epic speech wins.” Simon grinned as he held up his beer bottle.

“Have you spoken to her?” Shaun asked.

“Yeah, I did today when I stopped by the bakery and gave her the payoff letter from the bank.”

“How did she take it?”
