The following morning, I awoke to an incredible smell that filtered throughout the house. Pulling on a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt, I went downstairs.

“Good morning, Carter. I’m Ophelia, and it’s a pleasure to meet you finally.”

“Hi, Ophelia. It’s good to meet you, too. You didn’t have to go to all this trouble,” I said as I stared at the island full of breakfast foods.

“It’s no trouble at all. Go sit down, and I’ll make you a cup of coffee.”

Grayson walked into the kitchen. “Morning, bro.” He smiled. “Morning, Ophelia.” He kissed her cheek.

“Good morning, Grayson.”

“This is quite a spread,” he said.

“You know I love my family to have a good home-cooked breakfast. Gabriel, Piper, and Riley will be joining us.”

The sliding door opened, and the three of them walked in.

“Ophelia, you made my favorite!” Riley exclaimed.

“Anything for you, sweetheart.” She kissed the top of her head. “Dig in, everyone.”

“I could get used to this.” I smiled as I ate the banana pancakes she made.

“Right?” Gabriel grinned. “I love it when she wants to impress.”

After everyone ate, Gabriel and Grayson left for the medical center, Riley went to school, and Piper headed to the shop. I grabbed the plates from the table and took them to the sink.

“As soon as your things arrive, I’ll be over to help you organize everything.” Ophelia smiled.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want to. I know it can be overwhelming.” She closed her eyes. “Good morning.” She smiled.

“Morning. Ava?”

“Yeah. Sorry about that. Ophelia wanted to impress you.”

“There’s no need to apologize. She can cook a mean breakfast.” I grinned. “I’ll go shower, and then when you’re ready, we can head out to the furniture store.”

“Sounds good. I’ll go get ready now.”

CHAPTER 3

Zoey

“I can’t believe you’re leaving Sacramento,” Quinton said as he watched me pack. “What about us?”

“What about us, Quinton?” I turned and looked at him.

“Have you forgotten that we’re in a relationship?”

“Are we? Are we really in a relationship anymore? I barely see you.”

“That’s your choice. You’re always so busy, Zoey.” He threw his hands up in the air.

“My grandmother just passed away.” I stared at him.

“I know, and I’m sorry. I know she meant the world to you.” He tried to hug me, and I pulled away.
