“Why are you here? I was told you wouldn’t be.”

I walked past him and up the stairs to the deck. It was empty. The girls were gone. I ran to the railing and looked out at the other boat, pulling further away from the one I was on. Shaking my head, I turned around and stared at Carter standing there.

“Explain to me what the fuck is going on, Kind!” I shouted.

“Don’t be mad at the girls, but I needed to get you alone somewhere where we could talk, and you couldn’t run.”

“Wow. This was all a ploy? Seriously? What kind of people do this shit?”

“Apparently, my family.” A smirk crossed his lips.

“There’s nothing to talk about, Carter. We’ve said everything that needed to be said. I’m not doing this. Turn this boat around and take me back to the marina right now!”

“No. I’m not doing that.”

“Then I’ll just jump overboard and swim.”

“Really, Zoey? You can’t do that, and you know it.”

“Yes, I can. I happen to be a very good swimmer!” I shouted as I walked over to the railing and leaned over it, looking down at the water with the fear of sharks circling my head.

“You hate me so much that you’d rather risk your life than stay here and talk to me?”

“Damn right, I would. Ugh. I’m scared of sharks.” I slowly turned around.

Carter chuckled.

“It’s not funny. And it’s also not funny that you all tricked me. I will never forgive any of you for this.”

My phone pinged that was sitting on one of the tables. Walking over to it, I saw a text message from Charlotte.

“Your life is bigger than your fears. Remember that. By the way, we’re not sorry for what we did.” She attached the smiley emoji.

“UGH!” I threw my phone down.

“Can we talk?” Carter asked as he stood in the middle of the deck.

“No.” I headed down to the cabin, and when I went to open the door, it was locked.

“You locked the door?!” I shouted at him.

“Well, yeah. You’d go down there and lock yourself in one of the bedrooms or bathrooms. I had no choice.”

I walked over to where he stood with anger soaring through me. “How dare you!” I got in his face.

CHAPTER 30

Carter

“You already know I’m an asshole.” I smiled as I gripped her shoulders.

“Do not touch me!” She took a few steps back as she pointed her finger at me.

“Fine. No touching.” I put my hands up.

She stared at me, and all I saw was the anger raging in her eyes. The more I stared back, the softer they became.

“Do you promise to take me back after we talk?” she calmly asked.
