“Other people drink the water and don’t act like us.”

“Fine, we were born under bad signs. No other explanation.”

“What should we do?”

“I think if Goose would show interest in me, I’d be less crazy. Get Walla Walla to order her to do what I want.”

“Sure. That’s a plan we are making and will most definitely work. Now, fix my problem.”

“Is it possible Walla Walla is a chubby chaser?” she asks, making me frown and reach for my belly. “Just say yes, and then you’ll see how if you lost your curves, he’d get bored of you. All this,” she says and waves at my body, “is what hooked him. So, no more dieting or obsessing over the scale. Just embrace the college fifteen forever and ravish that man.”

Grinning, I very much approve of her last sentence. “He kisses so well. And he smells great. And he’s careful. I feel like he’s perfect. Stellar looks, a great personality, and a wonderful heart. I want to keep him.”

“Then do it.”

Sighing, I sink into the chair she vacated. “I’m going to mess up.”

“Maybe this guy likes train-wreck women,” she suggests while doing pinup-model poses in front of the mirror. “Imagine if you were normal. Who’d want to date an emotionally healthy, rich chick who runs a veterinarian clinic and has a sane friend? No, Walla Walla craves crazy. Just keep acting wacko while I increase the drama with my ridiculous flirting.”

Standing, I walk to Coco while avoiding my reflection in the mirror.

“You’re hot, Austen,” she says, noticing my weirdness.

“I look too much like Urick and too little like Suzanne.”

“You look so much like Suzanne that I’m surprised a man was involved in making you at all.”

“Okay, we’ll put a pin in that idea for later. Let’s talk about you and Goose. Do you think you want her so much because you’re actually in love with me? You should know Goose having red hair doesn’t make her a substitute for me.”

Coco gasps and steps back. “Is that a real question?”

“No,” I reply, wearing a smile. “But she isn’t your usual type.”

“My usual type breaks my heart.”

“So, this is you rationally choosing another romantic route?”

“No.”

“Then, what is it?”

Looking around the room, she returns her gaze to me and shrugs. “I don’t know. She’s hot, and she gave me the once-over. You know that look men do when they want you to know they’re judging you. Well, she did that and nodded. It’s like I made the cut. Since then, I’ve wanted to crawl all over her and explore what’s happening under her shirt.”

Coco’s words make me think she’s lonely and looking for anyone willing to want her. Except men are always checking her out. When we go out in the evenings, she’s constantly hit on. I am, too, but she replies to their interest with confident flirtation.

With Goose, she acts like a little kid with a crush. I’ve never seen her behave this way.

“I feel like we should come up with a game plan,” I say, trying to be rational. “We’re going to travel with them and then stay at their clubhouse. We need to be prepared for what might happen.”

“He’s going to fuck you, Austen,” she says like I’m a moron. “That’s what will happen. He wants you, and you want him. Once he gets you alone for long enough, he’ll fuck you. I suspect you’ll try to sabotage things at that point. It’ll be his job to either dump you or refuse to fall for your self-hatred bullshit. If he does the latter, which I think he will, you’re going to be so happy.”

“Though I want to be happy, I also don’t want him to touch me, let alone fuck me.”

“Austen, that big man is going to work with you like you did with Glorious Summer. He’ll build your trust, winning a little more sugar each time. Eventually, you’ll be on your back, legs spread, begging for more. I have zero doubt.”

“That visual makes me queasy.”

“Because you think you’re gross. But why are you even picturing your body in that sexy scenario? Are you so crazy that you’ve missed the part where a muscled biker will be buck naked and servicing your long-unloved body?”
