It was only a matter of time. I’m pretty charming.

Maren:

Or you’re full of it. You have no proof.

Me:

No, but I could draw one hell of a sketch of the perpetrator from memory. It’s seared in. Especially her face when she comes.

A smile grows on my face the longer the three little dots blink. She’s struggling with how to respond.

Me:

Next time you’re going to come on my face before I bend you over.

After another minute, she replies.

Maren:

Go to sleep, Cooper.

Me:

Good night, sweetheart.

Maren:

Not your sweetheart.

After being ridden like a wild horse, I slept like a rock. It’s just past six when I wake up to realize the power did indeed go out. The storm must’ve gotten as bad as they predicted. It’s probably been out for a few hours at least because it’s already chilly so I rush to brush my teeth and dress. Bundled up in a coat, I put my boots on and open the front door.

Oh wow. The world is buried in white. At least a foot and a half of snow has fallen. Drifts that must be three or four feet deep rest against some of the vehicles and trailers. There isn’t a person in sight. It’s the most subdued I’ve seen Happy Haven. The wind has calmed but large flakes fall in a thick, silent curtain as I make my way over to the community building to get the generator running. I have enough fuel to run it for a couple of days if need be. It wasn’t enough to power everything, but the furnace will work and that’s what’s most important.

After turning the heat on, I close the vents in the new laundry room area and head back to the office. It shouldn’t take long for the other rooms to get warmed up. Back outside, there’s no one in sight, but the rasp of a shovel scraping concrete is faint through the sound dampening wall of snow. Probably someone down the street.

The office laptop is fully charged so there’s no issue with looking up the list of tenant’s cell phone numbers. From the office cell, I text them to put the word out that the community room will be open in an hour and has heat.

Dylan calls to let me know he isn’t coming, not that I expected him to since he’d need a sled and a team of huskies. You can’t even tell where the street ends and the sidewalk begins.

The community building is nice and warm when I return, and I spend some time organizing things. I’m not sure if anyone will come or if everyone will. With this being a last minute, impromptu shelter setup, I don’t have a stockpile of food or cots or anything, but it’ll keep people from freezing to death.

I’m setting up a few chairs when I hear the door close and footsteps coming down the hall. Maren pauses when she sees me.

My mind instantly flashes back to last night, her lips around my cock, her nails digging into my skin as we both fell apart. “Do you want me today?” she asks.

Standing there wearing an oversized hoodie with her hair piled messily on top of her head, she’s sexy as hell. “I’d love to, sweetheart, but I’m pretty busy right now.”

Not a ghost of a smile, only a roll of her eyes. “Not your sweetheart. I thought you might need help since you’re inviting everyone here. I expect an overtime check.”

If she thinks I’m going to act like nothing happened, she’s crazy, but we’ll get to that. “Good idea. You don’t need to work in the office. It’s freezing there too. Just keep the office phone on you. Will you reach out to make sure everyone knows they can come here to warm up and stay as long as they need?” Nodding, she starts to go, and I catch her arm. Deep blue eyes hold a warning when they clash with mine. “Am I supposed to pretend that last night didn’t happen?”

After a few moments of quiet thought, she shakes her head. “No. Actually, I have a proposition for you."

When she hesitates, I lean down to murmur in her ear. “Does it include me spreading your legs and licking you until you can’t take anymore? Because that’s all I can think about.”

Her little inhale gives away how affected she is by me whether she likes it or not. “It could but only if you can keep things compartmentalized.”

Stepping back, I look down at her. “Compartmentalized?”
