She doesn’t retreat when I move into her space. “You like me. Not just what I do to you. You like me. You feel something too. And it pisses you off.”

Her chin tilts up. “You’re wrong.”

“Am I? So, you weren’t jealous when that girl danced with me? You’d be perfectly fine with it if I went in and took her into a dark corner somewhere? Maybe brought her back to my trailer?”

The flash of anger in her eyes answers the question. She stares at me for a long moment. When a smile inches across my face, she takes a few steps back, reaches up and yanks on the tip of the tree branch. Water rains down on me as she spins on her heel and strides across the parking lot toward the door.

“Very mature!” I call out. I’m not dripping wet, but my jacket and hair are damp when I return to the bar.

No one really notices since everyone is back on the dance floor except for Holly and Maren, who sit at the table. Their conversation ends when I approach. Holly glances at her phone. “My ride is here.”

“I’ll call you tomorrow,” Maren tells her.

After Holly leaves, Maren looks over at me. “You were right,” she sighs.

“You’re going to have to be more specific. I’m right about most things.”

“I was jealous and I shouldn’t have been. I can’t have it both ways and if you want to take that woman home, it’s none of my business.” It looks like it’s hurting her to get the words out. “As long as you’re honest so we know to start using protection.”

“Maren.” Shining blue eyes meet mine. “The only woman I want to take home is the stubborn one sitting across from me.”

Her lips tilt up. She takes a deep breath and announces, “I’m drunk.”

“You are,” I chuckle. “Did you have fun tonight?”

“I always have fun with you. Did you have a good time?”

Let’s see. The woman I’m crazy about just said she always has fun with me, got jealous over another woman hitting on me, and apparently has sex dreams about me. “It was a great night. Do you want to say goodbye to your friends and go get some tacos?”

“Hell yes.”

CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

MAREN

Cooper steps into the office and pulls off his dripping jacket, hanging it by the door. “Do the streets always fill up when it rains? Or is this more than you usually get?”

Neither of us has brought up the events at the bar the night before last. By the time we got food and went back to his bedroom, things were back to normal between us. He railed the hell out of me, and I stumbled across the street afterward to crash until noon. Good times.

“It’s spring. Days or even weeks of steady rain aren’t out of the ordinary. And yeah, the drainage sucks. The grates probably need to be raked over or cleaned out.” I’m more concerned about a message that was left a few minutes ago. “A security company called to say they’ll be out Wednesday of next week. What’s that about?”

He swipes his hair back with one hand as he rustles through some paperwork on his desk. “I forgot to mention that. They’re coming to install security cameras.”

“Where?”

“Hmm?” he replies absently, looking at the page he picked up.

“Where are you installing cameras?”

The edge in my voice catches his attention and he looks up at me. “They’ll cover the streets, driveways, and yards. The footage will be backed up to a cloud where we can access it.”

“You can’t do that.”

He blinks at me. “It’s legal. A lot of private properties offer it for their tenants. It’ll lower the amount of your renter’s insurance.”

“I don’t care if it’s legal. Nobody wants to have spy cameras watching them come and go.”
