My entire body relaxes, and I breathe easier as he continues. “I’ll take you to him as soon as they move him to a room, but I wanted to go over the post operative instructions with you. Will you be the one caring for him?”

In my concern and worry, I’ve forgotten that I’m supposed to be on a plane tomorrow morning. It doesn’t matter. There’s no way I can go now. “Yes.”

“Great. Depending on how the next few hours go, we should be able to release him by tonight or early tomorrow morning. You’ll want to fill these prescriptions.”

Liam goes over all the information with me. When to remove the bandages, what to expect, and what Cooper’s limitations will be over the next couple of weeks. He’s not going to like it. It’ll be another half hour or so before they get him into a room, and I take the opportunity to call Cara.

“You’re up early,” she says, answering right away.

“Yeah, listen. I’m not going to make it on the trip.”

“You’d better be joking.”

“I’m at the hospital with Cooper. He just had an emergency surgery to remove his appendix.”

“Oh,” she exclaims. “Is he okay?”

“He will be. They said the surgery went well. He was really sick when we got here.”

“Well hell.” She pauses for a minute. “I’m glad he’ll be okay. I’m sorry you’re going to miss Daytona though.”

“Me too.”

“Is there anything I can do? Do you need me to bring anything to the hospital?”

“No, it looks like they’ll discharge him by tonight or early tomorrow. We’re good. I know you and Lila have hair and nail appointments today. Don’t miss them.”

“Call if you need me and tell him I said get well soon.”

Once I hang up, Liam pokes his head in the room again and gestures for me to follow him.

Cooper looks a little pale, but his face is relaxed, and he doesn’t appear to be feeling any pain. He drags his eyes open when I sit in the chair in the corner.

“Maren,” he murmurs, his voice dry and raspy.

“I’m right here. Welcome back.”

“I’m awake.”

“You are. How do you feel?” I drag the chair closer to his bedside.

“I’m talking so I’m not a carrot or broccoli.”

It takes me a second to make the connection. “No, you aren’t a vegetable.”

He blinks a few times and nods. “Good. Nobody wants to fuck a green pepper.”

If he was any higher, we’d have to scrape him off the ceiling. “Okay then. Just hush and rest for a while.”

“Nope!” he chirps. A bright smile blooms on his face and he turns to Liam. “She tries to be mad at me. It’s funny. And cute. Isn’t she cute?”

Liam glances over at me with a grin. “She is.” I’m sure he’s seen and heard it all from patients coming down from anesthesia.

Cooper cocks an eyebrow at him. “Don’t even think about it, though. She’s mine.”

Liam holds out his hand to show him the ring on his finger. “No worries. I’ve been married for ten years this month.”

“Congratulations.” Cooper focuses on Liam and seems to forget I’m there. “She’s not my wife yet.”
