It’s far from the first time that Lila has helped her brother. He always promises to get his act together, but goes back to partying, then usually disappears again.

“He’s lucky to have you.”

Cooper and I hang out, answering questions and talking to everyone. If you would’ve told me six months ago, that I’d not only be madly in love with this man, but co-owner of Happy Haven, I would’ve thought your cheese had slid off your cracker. But here we are.

Once the meeting breaks up, it takes a while for everyone to go. When the last person has left, Cooper puts his arm around me, and we head outside to find the tailgate is once again missing from his truck. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he says.

“I’ll bet I know where it is.” I grab his hand and lead him down to the pool.

Underneath the sparkling blue water, propped up against the edge of the shallow end, is a black tailgate. It’s hard to get my words out through my laughter as I pat Cooper on the chest. “Things haven’t changed that much. This is still Happy Haven.”

THE END
