A couple of hours later, we are all caught up. I’m rinsing off some things in the kitchen and setting up in case we get another rush.

“I guess people heard what a success that banquet was last night?” Ciara asks, as she helps me.

“Seems that way, since business seems to be really picking up now,” I reply happily.

Honestly, I am just about as happy as can be. Even though it might seem hectic and chaotic, and even though it won’t make me rich – which is why I think Sheila is crazy for not finding out more about the money-making opportunity ASAP – I love my career and I’m so glad I can have my own bakery.

Ciara answers the phone and starts writing things down. Apparently, I have another custom cake request. I can’t wait to get started on it. Baking is so much fun.

I soon lose myself as I start designing the cake. Ciara watches intently. She wants to learn to do the things that I do. She’s a sweet person, and I don’t mind showing off my skills.

We work together and are proud of the finished outcome. Tired but proud. I’d say it’s already been a day’s worth of good work and that’s one of the reasons I love doing what I do.

Chapter 4

Tammy

The next day, I’m supposed to be getting ready for work, but I’m not ready to leave the comfort of my bed. I’m wide awake of course, lying here and staring up at the ceiling. I have a bunch of online orders I need to work on today, so I really need to get in there.

I’m just still not a morning person, despite needing to get up early to bake things. You’d think I’d be used to it by now, but some people’s internal clocks, or circadian rhythms or whatever they’re called, never totally adjust to schedules they don’t like.

I hope the store isn’t as packed today as it was yesterday. Although a busy day means a good day, it’s still a lot of work to handle.

My cell phone is charging on the dresser by my bed. It rings loudly. I blink a couple of times and then answer it.

“Hello?” I ask.

“You are not going to believe this,” Sheila says loudly from the other end of the phone.

“What’s up?” I ask curiously.

If she’s calling, it’s either important or she’s bored on her break at work. She has to go in even earlier than I do NOW, since she doesn’t own the place.

“So, I called Andrew and found out that this ‘money making opportunity’ is a virginity auction!” she says in shock.

I’m surprised by it too, but also a little intrigued.

“What does that mean exactly?” I ask.

I heard they have them in the big cities, but I’m not completely sure what they even are.

Sheila explains to me how rich billionaires can bid on women for anything they want, including their virginity. To be honest, that sounds kind of exciting. Being in a room with rich gorgeous men, all of whom are vying to sleep with me for money.

I don’t say this out loud. Sheila is still talking about it.

“You know I can’t do something like that though. I’m not that type of person,” she complains. “Plus, it’s not even a sure thing. They’re looking for places to have them, and believe it or not, they think the flower shop could be a good place.”

“Maybe you can just host it or something? Will you still get money if you do that?” I ask curiously.

“Yeah…. he did say I could make good money doing it that way, but I still don’t know,” Sheila says hesitantly.

I sigh loudly in exasperation.

“Oh, just do it. You’re wanting to save up money for your florist business, anyway. Besides, it’s not like you are actually participating in it,” I encourage her.

After a few seconds of contemplation, she says, “Maybe you’re right. I’ll have to call him back and talk to him about it some more.”

I sit up in bed and pull the covers around me.

“That’s the spirit, and now you have another reason to call and flirt with him,” I say, giggling.

Sheila hushes me.

“I was not flirting with him. It was the other way around,” she clarifies. “But I can’t say I minded, because he’s really hot.”

“Whatever, just call him and let me know how it goes. I need to get ready for work,” I reply, now feeling doubly jealous.

“Okay, I’ll talk to you later,” Sheila says, as we both hang up.

I put my phone back on the charger and lay back in bed. Once again, I feel envious of Sheila. I wish I had money making opportunities presented to me like that. My business could use the extra funds. I start thinking of all the improvements and expansion that I could make to my store.
