“Yeah, so he can spin the situation in his favor, or worse, lie to me about it.”

“I won’t say Gavin doesn’t lie, since clearly you know about the switching, but don’t you think you should have all the information before you make a decision.”

The ice emptied and the stands got dark, probably signaling the beginning of the game. I chewed on my bottom lip and considered his point, ignoring Gavin’s presence only a few feet from us.

“I’ll consider it, but I promised Kayleigh I’d let it go.”

He snorted. “So, you’re as much of a liar as Gavin.”

“Shut up,” I muttered.

We watched the guys play for a while in relative silence. Hockey was fast paced, with the teams constantly switching out players in the middle of play. Very different from football. Danny muttered comments under his breath, until a brutal hit on Gavin made us both sit up.

“Fucking assholes. It’s supposed to be an exhibition game.” Danny’s mouth tightened into a thin line.

I held my breath as Gavin shook his head, then let it out in a whoosh when he went right back to chasing the puck. “Theykeep targeting him, though it hasn’t slowed him down at all. I’m surprised he hasn’t thrown down with one of them yet.”

Danny draped an arm on the chair behind me and leaned closer. “Nah, he’s cold on the ice. Bottles it up until he’s in street clothes away from the team. If you want to see him really lose it, kiss me on the cheek during the game, then invite me up to your room after.”

I raised a brow. “Is your game really that bad?”

“No. I could get the puck bunny three seats past you if I wanted to, but I like giving Gavin shit. He needs someone to shake up his life every once in a while.”

“What makes you think he’ll see me kiss you on the cheek?”

“Because he won’t stop looking over here. If they weren’t playing a team with the stick handling skills of a toddler playgroup, he’d have cost them a couple of goals.”

I scanned the ice, and sure enough, Gavin passed the puck to Reece, then glanced our way. It was fast, but I caught it this time.

“No thanks. I don’t see a benefit to pissing off my roommate.”

“Aw, come on, Shortcake. I thought you liked to walk on the wild side.”

Gavin’s warning to stay away from his brother was inexorably tied to the hottest car sex of my life. I hated the idea I’d let Gavin win, even though the results had beenso good. I’d told myself any hot guy would have done the same, but how would I know for sure unless I tested the theory?

No way was I inviting Danny into my room, but hehadhelped me with Michael—a quick kiss on the cheek didn’t seem like too much to ask in return.

Before I could talk myself out of it, I leaned over to plant a chaste kiss on Danny’s cheek, but at the last second, he turned his head. I should have expected the move with the way he’d been baiting me. The kiss only lasted the length of a breathbefore he pulled away. Long enough with his lips on mine for a test though.

No tingles. No heat. Nothing. I hadn’t really expected a response, but a girl could hope. Danny was identical to Gavin, if it was simply a matter of being attracted to a hot guy, he should do it. Hell, Reece or Cole or even Mase should do it.

Nope. I sat back in my seat to the sound of Danny laughing quietly. When I absently glanced at the bench, Gavin was watching us, stone faced. A whistle blew on the ice, and Gavin turned away.

He didn’t look my way again for the rest of the game, and my sense of foreboding grew at about the same rate as Danny’s amusement. Whatever nonsense was happening between Gavin and me, I hoped I hadn’t just taken a torch to my living arrangement.

For the fourth time in an hour, a loud quack distracted me from behind the closed bathroom door. I wasn’t sure if Eva was home, but Henry was in a mood today. I guess I could relate.

I wasn’t pissed at the team—we’d won the exhibition game like we were supposed to—but I’d played like shit. Everyone had left me alone for the past couple of days while I stewed and pretended like I hadn’t noticed Eva kiss Danny in the stands. I’d invited him as a fluke because Mase had reminded me that I did, indeed, have family that might want to come.

Danny had sent a thumbs up when I texted him, which I’d assumed meant fuck off. I hadn’t considered it might mean ‘I’d love to watch you play and make a move on Eva while you’re fucking busy’. After watching her come all over my hand, I wasn’t messing around anymore. I’d tried to keep her away from the team because I’d been worried about her causing drama, but those assholes didn’t listen.

Now I wanted to keep her away from the team because the only one fucking touching her was going to be me. Either way, the drama would be contained.

My phone buzzed from next to me on the bed, but I ignored it. I’d been in my head for days, and I had a response paper to write. I didn’t have a lot of time to dedicate to schoolwork. Especially when my mind kept jumping back and forth between Danny and the date who hadn’t lasted long.

Oh yeah, I knew about the date. Cole said Eva had been set up by her dad, and I’d had no doubt Eva could handle the blond guy in the polo who’d stopped to talk to her. I wasn’t so sure about my brother.
