Cole: Since when do you go to parties?

Mase: h8 u all. muting chat

Me: We’re all going. Where?

Reece: Kappa house

I groaned, and Henry waddled out of the bathroom door I’d left open for her. Kappa parties were notorious for trouble. A bunch of business bros who thought money meant they could be assholes. Any guy who thought a Kappa party made a good first date wasn’t looking for a relationship, no matter what her dad said.

I had to remind myself the Eva everyone else knew wasn’t the one crying in my arms earlier. She knew her way around parties and business bros. I had to respect her choice, meaning I’d follow her to the party and refrain from beating the shit out of her date as long as she looked like she was having a good time.

Henry chittered at me, so I picked her up right as Reece burst through my door.

“No. We’re not bringing the duck. I love Henry, but I haven’t sampled the puck bunny wares in way too long.”

Cole appeared next to him. “Are you crashing Eva’s date?”

I frowned. “We’re not crashing anything. I just don’t trust Eva’s date to keep his hands off her.”

Reece raised a brow. “What makes you think Eva doesn’t want his hands on her?”

The way she’d let me hold her. The hitch in her breathing when I’d brushed a kiss on her head. The slight scrape of her nails against my stomach when I’d slipped my finger under her skirt.

My jaw clenched at the thought of some other guy’s hands on her thigh. “Trust me. I’m helping.”

Cole took Henry from me and shook his head sadly. “Don’t worry. I’m sure when Eva’s done with you she’ll hand your balls back mostly intact.”

Reece made a horrified expression. “Remind me toneverask for your help with the ladies.”

Mase popped his head around the corner. “What’s with the secret meeting?”

“If you hadn’t muted chat, you’d know,” Reece taunted him.

Sometimes I hated my roommates. “Can we focus please?”

Reece filled him in, adding, “It’s about time Gavin had some fun.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “We’re only going for Eva.”

He snorted. “Maybe you are. I’m going to find a nice lady to spend some quality naked time with.”

Mase shoved his hands in the pockets of his jeans. “I’ll go too. That way when Eva kicks your ass for following her and you drown your sorrows in cheap whiskey, I can drive you home.”

All three of us turned to stare at him, but his expression didn’t change. As usual, I couldn’t tell if he was joking. “Okay, Cole?”

He shook his head. “Nah, I’ll stay with Henry if you guys want to go out. You know how she gets cranky when left alone. We have an episode of Next Best Ninja to watch anyway.”

I was pretty sureColewasn’t joking, which made the whole conversation even weirder. “Fine, Cole is on duck duty. Mase is DD. Reece is a manwhore as usual. Can you at least control your baser instincts long enough for us to determine if we need to flatten Eva’s date?”

“Of course, anything for Eva. Did you know she got me a box of condoms the last time she had groceries delivered? If you weren’t basically tattooing your name on her ass, she might be my dream girl.”

“Great. Let’s go.”

We all piled into my car, except Cole who waved from the door, and I drove us to Kappa house in the money part of town. As expected, the place was full. On a warm night like tonight, there were usually girls in bikini tops and shorts covering the lawn in small groups.

Instead, we found a dressier event with an alumni banner draped over the door. No wonder Eva had pulled out the reddress. The plastic cups had been replaced with wine glasses, and I had the first inkling I may have been in over my head.

I parked on the street, and the three of us stood on the sidewalk watching people in cocktail attire mingle on the porch. We were dressed in jeans and shirts, so at least we weren’t rocking the hobo athlete look, but we definitely didn’t fit in.
