“Did we make it onto social media?”

Eva frowned. “Not really. Someone got photos of you, Mac, and Coach Kat crouching around me, but there was only mild speculation about why you’d be down there. I did find one video that caught you jumping down to the field in the background though. You’re lucky security didn’t kick you out immediately.”

“I know most of the security guys, and I wasn’t about to sit in the stands while you were injured.”

She cuddled closer. “I’m going to remind you I can take care of myself, but it was a pretty sexy jump.”

I hated being concerned about who saw me rush to her side. I hated not being able to hold her hand in public or kiss her when she met me after a game. Most of all, I hated that she was okay with it.

Her mouth pressed against my neck, and my cock jumped to attention. Eva had always had this effect on me, one of the reasons I distrusted her so much at the beginning. A relationship with her, even one only based on sex, seemed too dangerous when she wouldn’t take it seriously. Now, I couldn’t imagine my life without her, but I still wasn’t entirely sure where I rated on her priorities.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure I cared. She dropped her guard with me, let me get to know the person she was, the person she wanted to be, and I wanted her any way I could get her. Even if she broke my heart in the end.

I blew out a breath, resisting the urge to follow her lead. “You’re not distracting me with sex.”

She pulled back with a frustrated sigh. “Fine, then we should talk about Danny.”

“You want to talk about Dannynow?”

“Well, I’m awake and not getting fucked, so I might as well make good use of my time.”

I wouldmuchrather spend the evening fucking her than talking about Danny. “They said eight hours, Princess.”

“My head doesn’t even hurt, Gavin.”

“Talk. You have twenty-one minutes left to fill.” I set a timer on my phone and put it on the side table before scooting under the blanket with her.

She twisted her lips, and I braced myself for bad news. “I know about the switching, not just at Wildcat. His classes too.”

I didn’t react the way she clearly expected me to—I laughed. “I’m surprised it took you this long.”

She frowned. “Why are you risking everything to show up for classes he’s perfectly capable of handling himself?”

I tucked a loose strand of pink hair behind her ear and traced the edge of her jaw with my thumb. “It’s not everything. When Danny looks back on this, I want him to know I didn’t give up on him. TU has been a godsend, but if everything crashes and burns, I can find another way. I can’t find another brother.”

“Even if he’s being a little shit?”

I smiled, happy she was offended on my behalf. “It’s nice knowing I’m the good twin.”

She poked me in the side. “Ha ha. Why don’t you fight for whatyouwant?”

“Why don’t you? Your parents get to dictate your future, and you agree to it.”

Eva leaned back with a frown. “I don’t. They dictate my present to a certain extent, but if they got to pick my future, I’d already be married to a trust fund baby and joining my mom on her charity boards, instead of fucking my roommate in our living room.”

“Roommate?” The happiness from a moment ago faded, and the roots of unease I’d been ignoring suddenly bloomed large.

Her jaw firmed, and she doubled down. “Youaremy roommate.”

“Cole is your roommate. Reece and Mase, they’re your roommates. I’m the one you sleep with every night. The one you text when you had a good day or you want to vent. I’m the one who brings you coffee in the courtyard when you’re running late for your Tuesday date with Stephen. Try again, Princess, because roommate doesn’t cover it.”

“Boyfriend? Lover? Sugar boo? If you know what you are to me, why does it matter what word I use?”

Hurt sliced through me. “Because I’m not sureyouknow what I am to you. If you can’t even admit it here, when we’re alone, what am I supposed to think?”

Eva wet her lips and looked down at her lap for a long second. The sad part was no matter what she said, I wouldn’t leave. I’d sit there and take whatever crumbs she offered me. I braced myself for her to tear me down, but she gave her head a shake and met my eyes with determination.

“You’re right. I’m starting a fight because when I got hurt, all I wanted was you. Depending on another person to be your strength is a dangerous habit—one I’ve avoided until now. But I wanted you, and there you were.” She reached for my hand, linking our fingers together. “Idoknow what you mean to me. I’ve never needed anyone else the way I need you.”
