If she was willing to fight.

Instead of finding Eva asleep in my bed, I found Danny lounging on my couch. When I bolted past him toward the stairs, he stopped me with a few words.

“She’s not here.”

“Fuck.” I detoured to the kitchen to put her coffee in the fridge. “Where is she?”

“Don’t know.”

With her dad’s threats forefront in my mind, I had a pretty good idea. She was getting ready for his big debut.

Danny watched me stomp around the house and frowned. “What’s going on? I thought you wanted to talk to me.”

“I do, but I need to find Eva.” At the sound of my voice, Henry came flapping down the stairs, quacking. I picked her up, and she chittered as she settled down in the crook of my arm. “Where’s your mama, huh?”

The couch groaned as Danny got up to join me near the dining table. “Have you tried calling her?”

“Yeah, she’s not answering.”

He held his phone up, tapping the screen. “Let me try. Maybe she just doesn’t want to talk to you.”

My eyes narrowed. “Why do you have her phone number?”

“We’re friends.” He left it at that, and we both listened as the call went straight to voicemail.

Danny put his phone away with a frown. “Is this a danger squid situation or a booty call gone wrong?”

I squinted at him. “Neither. She’s not in physical danger, but her dad’s about to fuck up her life.”

“Can’t have that,” he muttered. “What do we do next?”

“This isn’t why I wanted to talk to you.”

“So? I like Eva. She deserves an unfucked life, and if you can’t handle it, I’m happy to step up.”

I lunged toward him, way too close to the edge my temper, but he held up his hands with a grin. “Just messing with you. Eva wouldn’t touch me, despite clearly being the superior twin.”

My teeth ground together, and Henry made an unhappy noise at my tight grip. “I’m not sure I want your help.”

He clapped my back as he moved past me to sit at the table. “Yes, you do. I’m a delight. Now tell me what’s going on.”

I gave in, setting Henry on the floor and telling Danny about my encounter with Eva’s dad, who hadn’t even given me his first name.

Danny whistled when I finished. “Are you sure you want to risk everything for her?”

The chair scraped across the floor as I sat down. “Yes. Are you sure you’re okay with me risking everything? It affects both of us.”

He frowned. “Obviously, I would prefer not to get kicked out of college in my last year for cheating, but it wouldn’t destroy me. Why don’t you call her friend? The one with the crush on Reece.”

“How do you know about Stephen’s crush?”

“We’re friends,” he repeated.

I wondered how often Eva talked to him. A tiny pinch of jealousy came and went. I trusted Eva, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of her befriending Danny. I’d tried to stay close to him in my own way, and she’d succeeded where I failed.

When I texted Stephen asking for help, he immediately FaceTimed me. He was grinning and bare-chested in a hot tub.
