Eva sniffled and pressed her lips together. “It goes with the outfit.”

I let my gaze trail down the fitted bodice to the cloud of pale pink material flaring out from her hips. “I like your dress.”

“Thanks. It has pockets.” She deadpanned back. “How did you know where I’d be?”

“Your dad threw Carl in my face as your date tonight, and I realized he was going to ambush you. I wanted you to know you weren’t alone, so I called in reinforcements.”

She shook her head and smiled. “Stephen. No wonder he looked so smug after he got back from the spa. He loves a juicy statement. I’m going to need a new phone, and a bunch of other stuff.”

“Do you think your dad will really cancel your accounts?”

“Yes.” She smoothed my lapel, wiping at some of the moisture. “He has to prove his point, and he won’t want to miss the chance of me changing my mind once I start slumming it like all you peasants. What did he threaten you with?”

“He said he’d inform the school Danny and I were switching in our classes.”

Her brow furrowed. “How the fuck did he find out about that?”

I shrugged, and the last lingering doubts faded away. “We’d gotten lazy about it. Anyone who was paying enough attention in Danny’s classes might have noticed. We’re pretty sure he can’t prove anything though. At worst, he’ll cause some drama that Dallas might frown upon.”

She tried to shimmy past me. “Let me go. I’m going back in there and ruining his fucking evening.”

I held tight, but she was stronger than she looked. “No. Eva, stop squirming. He has no incentive to follow through on his threats. The point was to keep me away from you. Clearly, that plan failed. Even if he’s petty enough to try to ruin my life for retribution, he won’t change much. Archer is at TU waiting to talk to me tonight, and I’m not going to be there.”

“Okay, then fuck my father, and let’s get you to the game.”

She was beautiful all fired up and willing to take on the world for me. Eva in her natural state was a force to be reckoned with, but I was just as fond of the times when she softened and let me take control.

Damn, I loved this girl.

I’d intended to ease her into the topic, considering her usual reaction was to run the other way, but after what she’d given up for me tonight, I didn’t think she needed time. She just needed a little push.

“You love me,” I teased.

A flush raced up her cheeks. “We don’t have time to get into this. You might not be able to play in your game, but you can still find Archer if we go now.”

I tilted my head with a smug smile. “I’m not leaving until you say the words, Princess.”

A tortured groan came out of her. “Is it always going to be like this?”

“God, I hope so.”

She licked her lips and surrendered, like she always did for me. “I love you.”

I cradled her face and rewarded her with a soft kiss. “See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”

“You are such an ass. Let’s go.” She tugged away and swatted my shoulder.

“Not so fast, Princess.” I yanked her back against me, tangling my hands in her hair and knocking a couple of pins loose. Her breath hitched at my tight grip, and fire lit her eyes. “I’m not done with you.”

“Whatever you want, it’s yours,” she whispered.

“I know. I love you too,” I murmured, then devoured her mouth.

The traffic godswere on our side, and we made it to the arena during the second intermission. Eva kissed me and sent me back to the locker room with a promise to find a seat.

A bunch of relieved greetings from the team met me as I strode inside. Most of the guys were in the process of shoveling in a quick snack, so the sound was somewhat muffled. Cole shook his head and dug some money out of his locker, handing it to Reece.

“About time,” Coach muttered. “Get your ass in your gear.”
