Once we’re inside my office, I hand Jack his sandwich and he gives a jaunty wave as he walks right back out, chuckling the entire time. I’m glad I was able to give him some entertainment for the day. He’s also someone who is invaluable to the company. He keeps our schedules in line and is usually a few steps ahead of me and my brothers. I have no doubt he’ll do the same for Lennon.

“You brought me lunch?”

Lennon’s question pulls me out of my head, and I focus on her. She’s looking up at me from underneath her lashes and I can’t help but kiss her forehead. It’s not nearly enough, not by a long shot, but it’ll do. For now.

“Of course. I was hoping if I brought you lunch then you wouldn’t be able to come up with an excuse for not eating with me,” I admit softly.

“It would be rude of me,” she muses to herself more than me.

I lead her over to the couch and get us set-up with our food on the coffee table. At first, the air between us is tense and stilted. As she relaxes, she lets me in a little bit. She answers my questions I ask about her likes and dislikes, and we talk about what it was like growing up with our single parents.

While we don’t get into the nitty gritty, by the time we’re done eating, it feels like I know her a little better and I hope she can say the same about me.

I’m floating the rest of the day, replaying our conversation and every moment we spent together. It’ll have to sustain me until I can get some more time with her.

CHAPTER 12

KEMP

After being busy at work the last few days and knowing that Lachlan got to eat lunch with our woman, I’ve been more than ready to see her and get a chance to spend some time with her by myself. Tonight is the night. I can’t stand waiting any longer.

I swear Lennon is like a damn drug and I’m addicted to her.

It wasn’t so bad when she was more of an idea after we saw her picture years ago. I was totally on board with her being ours. Knowing that gave me something to focus on while we worked to take over more of the business from dad.

Now that she’s here, now that I’ve met Lennon, it’s like I can’t get enough of her. If my days hadn’t been full, I would have found myself begging at her office door sooner. I don’t even care if it would have looked desperate.

When I knock on her door, it’s probably too loud and forceful, but I can’t seem to stop myself. I have no doubt Lennon isn’t expecting anyone and I hope I don’t freak her out, but I need to see her and spend some time with her.

Lennon’s eyes are wide and filled with surprise when she swings open the door. “Kemp,” she murmurs quietly before clearing her throat. Her eyebrows scrunch together, and she peeks her head out the door to look left and right down the hallway as if she’s looking for my brothers. When she rights herself, she looks up at me, curiosity in her gaze, “What are you doing here?”

I hold my hands up and promise, “It’s just me here, baby girl. I had a lot of work keeping me busy the last few days or else I would have been by to see you sooner.”

“Oh,” she breathes out and licks her lips like I’m making her nervous.

That little tell shouldn’t make me feel like a fucking king, but it does. I love the thought of being the one who throws her of kilter, and I find myself grinning at her.

When she arches her eyebrow at me, I realize I didn’t answer her question fully. “I’m taking you out to dinner,” I explain.

“You are?” She crosses her arms across her chest and leans against her doorjamb. There’s a challenge in her voice, “Are you going to ask and give me a choice in the matter?”

“Honestly,” I admit, “I wasn’t planning on asking because then you won’t have the chance to turn me down.”

Lennon throws her head back and laughs. I’m struck silent and frozen for a moment. Her laughter is one of the most beautiful sounds I’ve ever heard. It’s second only to the sound of her moaning and falling apart with pleasure.

“Well, in that case,” she sasses, “I guess I better get dressed.”

I eye her outfit with interest. She’s changed out of whatever business attire she was wearing today and is in some leggings and an oversized shirt which hangs off one of her shoulders to expose her creamy skin and hints at her tattoos.

“You don’t need to change,” I blurt and then rub the back of my neck in embarrassment. “I mean,” my words are stilted, “you look just fine to me, and we aren’t going anywhere fancy.”

When her brown eyes take in my jeans, t-shirt, and the leather jacket I’m wearing, I see hunger and desire spark there. I clench my hand into a fist to stop myself from reaching for her. I know if I do then I’m going to push her back into her apartment and take her to bed.

While I fully plan to end up in bed with her, I do want to take her out to get some dinner. The need I have for her is about more than her body and the chemistry between us, which can’t seem to be contained. I want to know how she thinks and if she’s enjoying Phoenix so far. I want to learn about the little things which make her smile and I want to hear more of her laughter.

“Okay then,” she shrugs one shoulder and then walks away from the doorway. She’s back a moment later with slip-ons on her feet and a small bag hanging from her wrist. “I’m good to go.”

“You sure,” I challenge her with narrowed eyes. The teasing in my voice is obvious, “You don’t need an hour to get ready?”
